How do I create multiple partions for my new HD?

I bought a new hd to add to my current system and have a dual boot.I am going to install Win8 (beta) on new hd, (1gb sata hi-perfomace Seagate Barracuda, 7200rpm w 32mb cache). I'm getting ready to partition the hd. I would like to have multiple partitions on hd, but I'm not real clear on a few things.:huh: First let me say that I'm not unfamiliar with partitioning a hd, just not multiple partitions for the purpose of keeping the OS, programs and data/doc separate. I have read up on creating multiple partitions, but I'm still a little confused about the type of each partition that the programs and data will go on. Once the hd is partioned and formated how is the os and program folder kept sepatate during the os install. I know the OS goes on the Primary. I'm not clear about logical and extended partitions and whether or not the programs and/or data goes on one or the other. Also, where is the MBR? Does that go on a separate partition as well or on the OS partition? I would also like to, if possible, decrease the hd data access time a little.

I will likely replace the beta version with WIN8 when the final release comes out and I will have quite a bit of software installed eventually. Some of the programs will be rather large, (Adobe CS5 Suite, games, images, music and video). All my data will be backed up on an external drive.

I hope that's enough info to get a dialog started. Thanks in advance for any advice, feedback or input.

It's a fairly simple process to partition....see this very helpful video. Once you have the hdd partitioned, it's like having 2 individual hdds...both will be assigned a letter and you tell the computer what drive you want your data to be stored on. Example; you can move all your pictures, documents and videos over to the newly created partitioned drive and when ever you save/download pictures and videos, you can change the location where they are to be saved/stored on...in this example; the new partition D:.

Thanks for responding so quickly. The video that you suggested is a good video for beginners and covered what I already know how to do. As I tried to point out in my post, I'm not unfamiliar with partitioning. I do know how to partition a hd in to several volumes. My other computer is a dual boot system with WXP 32bit and W7 32bit on a single drive. The computer that I am presently working on has a drive with W7 64bit on a single volume, which takes up the whole drive. I am adding the new drive for W8 64bit. What I want to do with this drive is put the OS on one part' and programs on one part' and data/doc on another part'.

EDIT: Since this reply I found a really good and very long tutorial. The latter half of the tutorial is for more advanced users but it covers all the info one would need, plus the tutorial is a step-by-step process with lots of before, during and after images. Although the tutorial is for WXP, I don't see that there would be any problem with applying this to later versions of Windows.
