This post can be long so maybe I just give some details in bullet points. Have been dealing with BSOD and just about had enough, so before I go and spend more money I found this site so I thought I'd post here for some advice and debugging possibilities

*Computer box bought in Dec 2010

Initial Components

  • Intel Core I3-540 with LGA1156 socket
  • Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3
  • DDR3-1333 2X2GB
  • Seagate 500GB
  • LG Sata 22x DVD burner
  • Win7 Pro 64 Bit
So after a few months of nice computing I had my first BSOD in March 2011. I am not into any games per se to put any strain on this computer nor do I know much about computing such as overclocking etc – just normal usage of surfing etc. I had McAfee Anti Virus Plus as I could get it for cheap from work via their home user program, have used mostly Mozilla firefox for browsing and we use Skype quite often.

At the beginning I thought nothing of the BSOD and continued using but it was more and less giving a BSOD about once a month for the next 4-5 months.
Coming close to November 2011 and the 1 year warranty expiry I took it back to where it was bought from saying I am getting BSOD and for him to check the minidump files. He did some tests, did not check the minidumps because apparently it is difficult to understand and send me home saying to come back if it happens.
So in the next months till about a week or so ago on average I had about 5-6 BSOD a month until two Saturdays ago I could not switch on the computer. The box lights were flickering but nothing was happening

Back to visit the place I bought the computer on Sat morning. He starts checking, does about 10% of memtest86, removes the memory etc, puts it back etc and decides that I need to change the motherboard.

But apparently the new motherboards (the one he installed is ASUS P8 B75-MLX) now don't work with socket LGA1156 so he also had to replace the processor with Intel I3-3220 with LGA1155, so after spending $200 I thought maybe I am back to normal computing but low and behold on my return home and over the next days, I have now encountered 5-6 BSODs on a daily basis

So yesterday I took it back, again he checked 15% of memtest86, did a scan of malware for any virus or trojan, put a new hard drive temporarily and tested with 3DMark and came to the conclusion that apparently I have software interlocking problem and he cannot solve it himself.

Now I am not sure if every computer repairer works the same way but this guy did not charge me any labour as I had bought computer from his shop and comes with 1 year parts and 3 year labour warranty but I am not sure what to do next. I keep on getting the BSOD.... I have a new motherboard and processor already, do I just buy the rest and have myself a new computer or do I try to find another repairer and spend good money for nothing... starting maybe with the PSU

But before I bite the bullet maybe the good lads of seven forums can help me if I link in my over 50 or so dump files here as per forum instructions

Thank you

Welcome aboard.

Seen most of your dumps. There are various bugchecks and various probable causes. So it is really a tough situation to discriminate between them all. Still, I want to suggest some basic things, those might change the situation a bit, hopefully.

First of all, uninstall all Gigabyte programs. Those are trouble causers, sometimes.

Second, you have two antivirus programs installed. Where McAfee is a worst crap, and Norton is also a known trouble maker. Uninstall them both. Use Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows, it will provide better security than any other thing. And, if there are two AV programs are running at the same time, conflict is must.

When done, run system file checker, for three times.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Free up the startup. It is also a must here.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
After doing all those, let us inform the situation. If it crashes again, upload the dumps, we will start bugcheck analysis. Just, before starting it, making the system a bit problem free.

Now a question ... what are the USB devices you are using?
Let us know it, in detail. Product, specification, and age.

Best of luck :)

Hi Arc, thank you for taking the time to check and respond

As per your instructions I have tried to uninstall all Gigabyte programs, however one of them is erroring and is not uninstalling. This is smart6 B10.0422.1 which is giving me the following error (Can not find the SMI port!). after pressing ok 3 times it gives me another error message of (Password failed. Input password error.) Anyway this program is still on the PC

The I removed McAfee and then Norton which asked me to restart system, then I downloaded the Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windowsand as soon as it downloaded, I had a BSOD but have a feeling I had changed the minidump setting to kernel memory only so i seem not to have this minidump. Have changed the settings back to minidump now

I installed Microsoft security essentials

Then I did the SFC scannow as per instructions for 3 times and all 3 scans gave result “windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations”

I then freed up the start up and now only the antivirus is on

In regards to your question about what USB devices I am using, I assume you mean the permanent devices not temporary devices that are attached for a small period of time and then removed such as external hard drive or iphone phone, or picture camera. So here you go in terms of the fixed USB devices

A wireless USB adapter netgear WG111.v3 for the wifi, about 2 years old
Logitech USB Camera (Communicate STX) – Webcam, about 3.5 years old
A widetech optical mouse WT2022, again about 2 years old, one thing I noticed when checking this in devices menu is that the drivers were from 2006 or so it said.

Okay no BSOD for the last 1 hour so far. Time to monitor

Do two more things.
Go to logitech and download the latest driver for the camera, and download the also update the network driver.

The rest is just the waiting game.

I am unable to find the Windows 7 driver of this logitech camera. On this page it is QuickCam Communicate STX V-UBK45 with Software and Driver Support being apparently QuickCam 10.5

Webcam software and driver support for Windows - Logitech FAQ

However this is not listed with an "x" under WIN7

What do you mean by updating the network driver? what is a network driver?

Ah I also had another BSOD 20 minutes ago

Upload that dump. That will provide some helpful information, for sure.
Alongwith checking that dump, I will guide you how to update the network driver. You upload the SF Diag tool "grab all" output.

What is seen, the webcam is not compatible with windows 7. So, it will cause crashes, all possibilities are there.

Hello again Arc

Well I have hit a few bumps. First of all I contacted Logitech who sent me a link to the software that I should use with the cam and when I downloaded it was the same as what my software was albeit dated from 2009

Support + Downloads: QuickCam Communicate STX - Logitech

So logitech Australia seems to be telling me their cam with this software is compatible with my WIN 7

Now the other 4 things
1► Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver - Done
2► Intel(R) USB 3.0 Hub Driver - Not done. I put it this in the search http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword="+Intel+USB+3.0+Hub+Driver"

And I keep getting the eXtensible Host Controller Driver
3 NETGEAR WG111v3 - According to the research I have done on the linked netgear website WG111v3 I have the latest driver version however one thing I noticed is that the user manual clearly says Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, while I think my system has USB3.0. I have two USB slots at the front that are used on temporary basis and I think 4 or 6 at the back of which 3 are used by mouse, webcam and adapter. From memory when I bought this desktop, the seller said only the front 2 are USB3.0 although I am not sure if this is really correct and that my rear USB's are only 2.0

4 Intel Graphics driver
Again could not figure out how to find this. It gave me about 19 choices so then i used this site Intel® Driver Update Utility where it scanned my system to see if I have the latest drivers and gave me these results

As general observation however it seems my BSOD's have reduced now... I just had one about 30 minutes ago and the computer has been used for about 3 hours. I have uploaded the latest dump again

Thank you again

Hi Vir Gnarus

I turned on driver verifier this morning and had about 9 or so crashes today. I noticed that when the computer was on and I was not doing any work per se it was not crashing but this evening (sydney time it crashed about 5 times), I wonder if it is my mouse that has an issue

Anyway latest dumps in zipped format attached

BTW, I have now turned off driver verifier. I had been on for about 12 hours

Driver Verifier does not appear to be on when looking at these crashdumps. Verify it's on by opening it up again and going to "Display existing settings". If it shows the checks are enabled and there's a list of drivers, then it should be on. Otherwise, it's not. Remember when you set it up to restart the PC immediately afterwards, otherwise all changes are lost.

Mate, I am pretty sure I followed the instructions properly. All the 18/10/2012 dumps should have been while the verifier was on - However as these instructions here says to stop verifier, I stopped it first before I created the dump files via sf diagnostic. Is that perhaps the reason you think the verifier was off

http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...-driver-verifier-identify-issues-drivers.html

"""Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post."""

Any case I have just turned it on again and did the check you described and it is currently "on"

Thank you Vir Gnarus :)

That's strange. I mean, the crashdumps don't lie about whether it's on or not (since it's reporting if it was on during the crash, not when the crashdump was made), but it's rather peculiar that Verifier would not be active when these happened. I don't distrust you on this, but all I can say is give it one more go and see if we'll be luckier this time. Of course, make absolutely sure it decided to turn on after you restart the PC from setting it up using the aforementioned method with "Display existing settings". If it somehow shows up blank despite you follow the instructions to the letter, then we'll have to approach this some other way.

ok, I think I have found 1 reason for my crashes - but there might be many more

Whenever I go into Skype and start the webcam via options and video I am getting BSOD,

Now this could be 1 reason out of many that I might have but as there is doubt after my discussions with "ARC" here if my webcam is Window 7 compatible because it is about 3 years old, I probably will be removing all software by logitech and reinstall a fresh version. Once this is done, I will be testing to see if I get more BSOD, if I do time to invest in a new webcam

The other thing I noticed recently in between BSODs is that I am getting flash plug in crashing when watching youtube videos, and just recently I was on a microsoft page and had microsoft silverlight plug in crash on me. I also notice that google chrome and mozilla firefox also crash quite often

It might be as a result of wider problem that I might have with my computer but I thought I'd disclose in case it is linked to things you can see from within the dumps

Thank you Vir Gnarus (PS do tell me what else you see from dumps)

There are some bugchecks that report themselves as being from Driver Verifier despite DV actually being off. However now that doesn't seem to be the case here. It appears it's just a problem involving the lack of DV information that usually attaches itself to minidumps. Minidumps are just extremely finite and fickle in what data they decide to collect, which is why I often don't like dealing with em, but in some cases they are a necessary evil.

Yes, now that we have what appears to be a very consistent pattern dealing with your Logitech webcam drivers, it's evident you'll want to do something with it. The flash and silverlight would also be affected because they can implement usage of your webcam. Try dealing with that before we proceed.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by your request of attaching a single dump file. You can, but make sure you archive it first as it may be rejected otherwise.

Hi Vir Gnarus. well all my later dumps dated 18 & 19 October have happened when the driver verifier is on

I have uninstalled all logitech software, then renistalled from the link that logitech australia customer support had sent me to upload software, and then tested it as follows

Went into skype, options and video setting and webcamera and boom bsod, I then downloaded yahoo messenger and the same thing happened as well

I also have run 3DMark03 and it also resulted in a BSOD towards the end I think because of ntoskrnl.exe according to my reading of the dump file checked with bluescreenView

Other comments, I have kept the computer on overnight till the morning and it seems to have crashed and restarted about once an hour so I am not sure why it would crash while no webcam is being used. i switched it off in the morning before going to work

What I meant by single dump file attaching is that I have sometimes done the SF diagnostic and then attached a zipped file of the dumps and then I get another bsod a minute or two later, so I can perhaps just attach that latest dump file by itself rather than having to restart and redo the entire SF diagnostic way of attaching the zipped file for the sake of that last mini dump

Here is the latest dumps zipped. Shall look at new Window 7 Webcam over weekend, or maybe I borrow from friend to test first

Thank you
