My Windows 7 home 64 bit system won't load , but goes into a perpetual loop because HAL.dll is missing .

I have a rescue disc , but efforts to use System File Checker only get the reply " there is a system repair pending "

I have copied HAL.dll from another computer onto a USB memory stick but I have no idea how to proceed further to load the file from the USB into the inoperable machine .

I'm pretty much a novice , and would welcome any advice offered .

**Make sure that your USB memory stick is plugged in when you start doing this**

And is your HAL.dll that you copied from another Windows 7 computer?

1. Using your startup repair disk, open a command prompt. It opens with drive X: Don't worry, we're going to change drives anyway.
2. Find your system drive. It's the one with the Windows folder in it. It's usually drive C: or D:
3. Find your USB memory stick in the system. It could be drive E: to drive W:, Y: or Z:. You'll have to open each drive until you get to it.
4. Once you've found your USB stick, copy HAL.dll from the USB stick to <system drive>\Windows\System32
5. Once done, close the command prompt window and reboot.

If that was all that was wrong, it should reboot just fine. If not, post back and let us know.

Thanks a million . Worked perfectly . I struggled before because I hadn't realised there was a prompt for "copy "
