How do I recover an unallocated partition? -Resolved

Since I got my last problem solved through here and another forum, I thought I would post here again to watch the geeks come out of the woodwork. I want to recover an unallocated partition that remained after I deleted Ubuntu. I want this unallocated partition back with the main partition where I believe I have Windows 7 installed. Click on the URL below to see the partitions. If you can't click it, copy and paste into your browser. I enclosed comments and arrows on the screen capture so you can easily understand what I want to do. I can follow clear instructions. Hint! Just keep this in mind, you're dealing with a newbie. Hold my widdle bitty brain in your powerful hands as you walk me through this.

All jesting aside, thank you so much for your help. :)

This is really easy if you use a 3rd party app like Paragon disk suite. Free to try

1-delete partition with no drive letter
2-expand the HP partition

Thats it

Let us know when you are ready to do it or if you need help

Right click on "unallocated" in Disk Management and see whether it gives you the option to further delete. Then right click on C > Extend partition.

LOL, looks like I was the slowpoke.

You cannot delete Unallocated space as it is empty deleted space already.

As suggested, in Disk Mgmt. rightclick C: to Extend it into the unallocated space.

Or....You could at this point decide to keep your files on a Data partition which you make there. This way if you lose your OS again, you have your files kept safe in their own partition until you repair or reinstall C:

Here is how to link a User file to another partition location: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location.html

Is the delete handled by Paragon disk suite? Do I need a drive leter on the unallocated partition. BTW, thank you for your quick reply.

Edit: It was for a 32 bit computer, I have a 64 bit. I just remembered, I installed Partition Wizard yesterday. I haven't used it yet. I will try and see if I am able to figure it out, and if not, I will be back for help.

If its already unallocated, it has already been deleted.

You can add that space to the neiboring partition, or create a new partition.

Some Imaging software can use a partition with no drive letter as backup space. It will be hidden from the OS however.
If you intend to use the partition for DATA, you will need a drive letter so the OS can use it.
You will have the option to assign a drive letter or no letter when you create the partition in disk management.

Well, I try to delete the unallocated partition but "delete" is ghosted. Do I need to do something with the partition before I can delete it? Here is another view of the partitions insice Partition Wizard.

Sorry Wishmaster, I didn't see your post. I would like for c: to have the GB. How do I move the unallocated GB over to the c: partition using Partition Wizard?

What happens when you right click on C and "Extend Partition"

I found it and it is working. Thanks for all the help, guys. I have the free version of Partition Wzard, so I guess there is not quick way of merging these two paritions. It will take some time to move 200GB without a Quick merge.

Strange, Partition wizard shows the unallocated space to be Logical.

Normally it would need to be converted to Primary to add to C: which is primary, but it seems Disk Mgmt was able to extend C: anyway.

Greg,
I have been moving the GB over to c: but it is slow. It still shows the partition as Logical. Should I change it to Primary before continuing?

Edit: The program will not allow me to change it to Primary. The choice is ghosted.

Ouch! I had this all written out for you until I read you had already extended C. Here goes again:

IF you are already resizing or extending C: DO NOT INTERRUPT it as it will brick your Win7.

You likely need to create a Partition there to convert it to Primary. So boot Partition Wizard CD, rightclick unallocated space and Create New partition there, try to create a Primary one but take whatever it gives you for the whole space, click OK.

Then once you get a partition created there, rightclick>Modify>Convert to Primary, OK.

Now you can rightclick>Delete the new Primary partition you created and modified, OK.

Now rightclick C>Resize>drag right grey border all the way over unallocated space to include in C:, OK. Apply all steps.

You really need to do this with PW CD if you do the Resize step because by not having to restart, it reduces the failure possibility to almost zero. Any partition manager besides Disk Mgmt can fail during resizing, but we haven't had it happen here yet helping with hundreds of operations using Partiton Wizard bootable CD.

I had only extended it 2GB. It is very slow.

I don't have Partition Wizard YET. I will go and download it as soon as I am finished here.

Not sure about what you mean here. It this the bar at the bottom of the screen in Partition Wizard?

I'm getting the download for PW CD right now.
Thanks for the advice.

The resizer in Partition Wizard is a very cool slider bar on both sides which will allow you to slide the partition either direction where there is unallocated space. In your case, you would grab the right-hand slider bar with your mouse and drag it over the unallocated space so that it takes it all up.

Once you do this, click OK and Apply, it will extend the C; partition over into that space but since there isn't any data to be copied, the risk is minute.

Hi kittyhawk63
I would not change D:\ Because it is factory made to restore your computer if some thing goes wrong
with windows it is where the factory image is stored !
Good Luck

Got it. Thanks. Your username reminds me of a friend I had back in college. His name was Greg Crocker. He worked as an acrobat skier for Marine World in the S.F. Bay Area back in the 70s.
Here is a screen capture of Windows Partition Wizard...not of course the CD version. I think the slider appears at the bottom. This is version 5 of Parition Wizard.

I have the same problem but my partition says FREE SPACE instead of UNALLOCATED.. I can't clic on extend C:

I was using this 10 Gb partition for ubuntu but I just deleted it, after that I had some boot problems that I have already solved (just like the creator of the thread) and before I installed the ubuntu into this partition I had the option to extend C:

Here is a picture of my disk manager:
