how do I recover data from a non responsive hard drive?

I had to boot with the pen drive.

But if it succeeds showing all the partitions after we go through a quick/deep scan and rebuild MBR exercise we may restore it to its original condition as before to access the data as usual. If it proves not possible, we have to resort to data recovery options. At the moment we really do not know what is the cause so we are only trying a known technique that has been successful in many cases and also not successful in many cases. We are still probing.

I'm using jumanji instructions so we're all on the same page. If this recovers the partition(s), it is the best scenario.

click on Partition Recovery and do a quick scan, then post a screen shot.

I think you've done this before so I'll keep the instructions short. (or maybe that was another thread)
You still want to take it step by step though.

okay... here's the screenshot after the scan.

keep in mind that it takes 45 minutes to reboot while the dead drive is installed. So hopefully not too many more reboots

That looks like the main window to me.
I would expect the scan to return something like the image in this PW page:

Did you do a quick scan or a full scan?

If you haven't yet scanned - follow the directions in the Minitool PW link above

I clicked Partition Recovery, and got the first image from your link. Choose Full Disk, then Quick Scan. Then clicked on all of the partitions that I wanted scanned... hit Finish, and then it did it's thing for a short while and then gave me the screen you see in my last post.

and you selected the parts on that screen?

or are you saying that you selected the parts on this screen

it was after the second image (scanning range settings) and was like the first image... but it listed all of the different partitions on the dead drive, asking me what I wanted scanned.
So I ticked the boxes on all of them, and hit finish.

I never got a screen with the information shown in your image one. After it scanned for awhile (maybe a minute? not long...) it gave me the main screen that I posted a screen cap of.

select disk 2 - that's the faulty disk correct?
------- press the next button
select Full disk
------- press the next button
select Quick scan
------- press the next button

it should start scanning.

It sounds as though you selected the parts in range, but I'm not clear on what actually ended up in the field. It might have only been the last part you selected.

IT's important to specify Full disk, even if you only want certain parts.

When it's done scanning BEFORE you hit finish, please post a screen shot - it should be the Choose Search Partitions similar to the first image in post #47 This screen shows the addressing information.

It would be easier for me if you posted a screen cap for each step and wait for me to review before continuing to the next step.

Sorry I missed your post, you didn't have to reboot.

It's not clear that you did something incorrectly, so instead of wording it out, I figured it would be better to just run it again - with pictures for me to review and see what you see.

I did all of this, and the screen looks exactly like the screen caps you posted.... after clicking Quick scan and hitting next, I get the following screen (See cap)

when I hit Finish on that screen, it takes me back to the main screen that I have already posted....

(EDIT: oh, and I did select all the partitions)

Do you see your data if you select / highlight the partition?

Take a peek at what can be read on each part - is it what you expected to find?

jumnaji mentioned the MBR, but I want to be sure we're done with the Part recovery before taking that step.

I just had a quick glance. Yet to give a thorough going.

On the face of it everything looks good.

Canuck67, after the Quick Scan, when the screen appears, select all partitions in it by placing the tick mark in the squares.

Now look at the bottom preview of disk map.

Does it show your full drive as before?

Please post a screenshot so that we can view the disk map.

Don't worry, There is no way you can go wrong. May be only you have to repeat many times if you cancel PW

I think the partition table was rebuilt and all I wanted to do was verify that there wasn't an apply operation.

Slow down and wait for the next step - ask if the member helping you wants you to boot, scan, apply, etc. I don't think there's any harm, but it does take some extra time.

Unfortunately, forum trouble shooting isn't real time. Members help other members and might get pulled away from one thread for a while.

When the machine is back up - just post a screen cap of the main PW screen.

I just thought that I might have confused you when I asked if you could see the data. You can explore inside of PW or in Linux, you don't have to return to Windows.
