I am posting this after searching to ensure that this topic is not addressed in this forum.

I have recently had reason to download and try out some free software which unbeknown to me also installed itself as my homepage on both Google Chrome and Firefox.

I would appreciate advice on how to permanently remove this rubbish.
Not particularly interested in having to pay for software to do so.
Apparent on Google Chrome and Firefox.
I look forward to replies.

I had the same problem. Reset your web browser and uninstall BitGuard application, otherwise search gol will reapear afer restart. At first I didn't even noticed it, removed Search-Gol toolbar and Delta-toolbar. Everything seemed to be fine until I restarted my PC. BitGuard is malware detected by most antivirus scanners, see this Search-Gol Removal Guide
