How do I set up for installing a SSD

I got though all of that thanks for the exact commands. Had I looked at the instructions 1st the drive came with data migration software. I don't think it was ghost. I believe it would have done the transfer automatically.

I can’t get the ghost program to clone the drive and Macrium freezes at 47% every time.

You can see the results from the process you directed me on. Looks like I have a healthy drive ready to use. I don’t know where to go from here. I guess I can load widows the old fashion way and stay up all night doing it.

Will be glad to help Steve. I have not used Ghost in a few years because my Ghost14 worked only in Vista. But as far as I recall, it does the same thing as Macrium. It is only a bit more complex to operate.

If the OP has a specific question, I'll be glad to look at it. But I am too tired to read thru 18 posts, lol.

Don't 'clone' with Ghost but make an image. that should work.

As for Macrium, download the WinPE .iso from my Skydrive and burn that to CD. You can image with that like with your installed Macrium. Just boot with the CD in lieu of the OS. Maybe you have more luck with that.

If, of course, you already have a WinPE cd, use that.

Was that just the Macrium boot disc? I tried it and as when I did it in windows it freezes at 47% and I end up with unallocated drive

The norton is crap. I guess I'm going to do a fresh install. Should I go through the trouble of diskpart prior the loading windows or does it not matter?

So both the installed Macrium and the WinPE disc stop at 47% - is that what you say? That is very strange because apparently your system is working.

Do you have user data on the C partition?

I also suggest to run a chkdsk C: /r

if the WinPE disc was the boot disc I used mine I'm going to try restoring a image.

One last thing if you have time. I did not run diskpart after the image restore failed. I believe what was said was if you install windows it will do everything. I just install as normal.

Correct, it should do everything. Did your drive show as empty?

It showed up unallocated. Also I plugged my DVD drives into ports 4 and 5 and I can boot from cd.

Great, you should be good to go then. Although it is a lot more trouble, a clean install is the best way to go. At least you know everything has started off right. Good luck to you and let us know if we can be of any more assistance.
