How do I use custom sound schemes?

Okay, I want to use the XP sounds in Windows 7 (I like them better), but my sister on another user account doesn't, and the Media folder is for all accounts. I tried making the XP sounds a custom sound scheme and making the "Windows Default" be the 7 sounds again, but then selecting the custom XP scheme simply plays the 7 sounds.

What am I doing wrong? Can someone give me a step-by-step tutorial on how to get this working, or is my only solution to replace one of the other sound themes with the XP sounds?

Hello Roadsguy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While the contents of the Media folder is shared by all users, each user sets their own sound scheme to whatever they like without affecting the other user accounts.

The tutorial below can show you more on how each user can change their sound for events, and save or select a sound theme. If you have any questions, then please feel free to ask.

Hope this helps, :)

It didn't help at all. It told me only what I already knew and didn't work.

While in your account, did you use "Save As" to save your sound scheme with the XP sounds.

You may need to manually select the XP sounds for each event again. Afterwards, save the sound scheme again.

You sister doesn't have to use the XP sounds. They are only available in Media folder. She can continue using whatever sounds or sound scheme she likes without affecting your account's sounds.

If this still doesn't help, then please post back with more details and specific questions, and I'll be happy to help.

XP sounds for 7 events? What a great idea! I mounted my old Macrium XP-Win7 dual boot image for my old ASRock motherboard (just in case I have to ever RMA my month-old Gigabyte board), and copied the contents of the XP OS's Media folder to my 7 Media folder... then change the 7 sounds to XP ones, and save it as a custom sound scheme! Thanks for this!!
