How do send a "click to download" link?

I have server space and routinely put files on there to download..

I can send a direct link that clients can click and the file (usually a video) will open on their computer..

However, they are not always able to right-click to save-target-as or whatever they do on a mac to do the same..

Is there a way I can send HTML code in the email so when they click it, it forces
a prompt to download the file?

The easiest way around your problem would be to register the server with a domain name.
Then normal web linking would work.

I'm not a website/html programmer so I can't say for sure. As a computer user who was annoyed by links automatically opening programs on my PC, I have managed to find registry hacks and browser options that prevent the automatic opening of mp3 and pdf files. The main problem is the file extension that tells the PC what program to open. Perhaps you could add .zip to the end so the computer would by default assume it must be downloaded and instruct the user to save the file in a place they can find it and then edit the name by removing the ".zip" ending.

Another possibility for emailed links might be to include the file as an attachment to the email instead of as a link in the body of the email.

My server is a domain, I can send a link like this:

http://www.myservername.com/file.mp4

However, the clients I work with can't download the file.. They don't understand
right-click and save-target-as or click and hold to save or cntrl-click to save..

I need to have it where I can send a link that says

CLICK TO DOWNLOAD

and when they click it a download prompt comes right up...

I can't rename the file and ask them to rename it, these are agency creative (mostly mac) users
they don't understand stuff like that.. I have to make it very easy and automatic for them..

I come across many sites with links that advise, Right click and select save target as. Could you do that.?
