Solved How do we remove the disable Windows 10 registry entry?

I guess it is time for me to bite the bullet and let Windows 10 install in at least a couple of my computers but I don't know how to remove the registry entry which I assume will prevent Windows 10 from installing.

I tried Googling it but failed.

If you choose edit on it it will open in notepad and show you what it put in but it is most likely this one.

Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1

This one I believe is only off GPO on a domain (that's how i'm using it on 2008 R2 server)
Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

Change the values of the ones you do have to 0 and reboot then you should get the prompt in a bit to do it.

Just an FYI for future reference, that tutorial with the reg file you posted, has one to enable it as well.

For the record, I started the download and install process at 2:00 P.M. on May 19 and the process was done at 10:00 P.M.

Then the fun began - programs not responding, lockups, forced reboots, BSODs etc. I went to bed at 2:00 A.M. on May 20.

Got up at 5 something May 20 to work on the problems. Gave up about an hour later a cranked up Macrium Reflect and went back to Windows 7.

This was my second bad experience with Windows 10. Problem was on another computer.

I do have 10 on another computer which I am dual booting 7 and 10 but that was a clean install which might explain the fact that the only problems I've had were related to updates which Microsoft eventually fixed. Also, the only non-Microsoft programs installed are Ccleaner, Xyplorer and Firefox.

I think I'll stick with Win 7 to the end.

I wouldn't have used the windows update method myself, if I wanted to do an upgrade I would just download the ISO and used the method here,

The process is that i'v made a lot of money reversing it and doing the better way with the ISO recently. Too many people are bringing in their machines due to a botched update. I'm glad they released the GPO edit for servers and pro users.

I know people who pay $200 to have a virus removed. Just can't believe it.

Just turned 82 so I don't know how much longer I'll be around to continue playing.

This is why I have never bought an upgrade version of Windows. I only buy full retail versions. The upgrade experience never seems to go very smoothly and it's always much nicer to have a fresh start with a new OS.
Plus it means I can still keep my old OS running and not have to worry about MS licensing slapping me on the virtual wrist

I think MS may have stopped selling boxed upgrade versions now anyway, I haven't seen any being sold.

Yea some times is better to do inplace upgrades at least 10 should activate easily
After that then the clean install of 10 should self activate

I've never been able to just use a qualifying key to activate 10.

Haven't your Windows 7/8.1 keys activated a fresh install? If you use the phone option MS should activate the qualifying key since the November update was released.

No I never did try the phone activation route.
I did once when I reinstalled Vista sp2 a few weeks ago though went okay
