How do you revert a filetype back to unknown..?

Hi, I've accidently set another .cnf filetype to be known, as well. It's just so aggravating to see them have an icon as if they're good to open..how can I make them to open with nothing once again..?

I believe you have to remove or edit the file type association that ties that file type to a program. if you type "file type" or "change file type" in the search bar you should find the place to do it.

I tried and it only wants me to specify a program, I can't leave it unknown..

This will allow you to restore the default registry entries and program associations for the Windows 7 file extension type of your choice.

CNF is a Telnet Configuration File. The only association it has it to Telnet.

Ohk. I've got .sav and .CNF I'd like to restore to unknown. The .CNF are in all my PS1 games and .sav are some saves. The .CNF I had done by mistake, as I checked Properties and hit Enter thinking it was to hit Ok and made it for Adobe Reader..

1) To remove a file type association, you can use a great utility found on winhelponline.com. It has a GUI.

2) I believe you can do it from the command prompt also with the "assoc" command. See this page for complete instructions.

You know when you try to open a file that Windows doesn't recognize, it asks you how you would like to open it by bringing up a list of programs to choose from? Well, OP would like to restore the file's behavior to that, right now it opens up with Adobe.

Now I understand the question I have looked for the answer and it might be here:

Try this simple 3rd party program

1. Download unassoc.zip from the Attachments section, and save to Desktop
2. Extract the contents to a folder and run the file unassoc.exe
3. Select the file type from the list
4. Click Remove file association (User)

If the file still associates with Adobe, click Delete file type

I found this by Googling the problem. The red parts I copied and pasted so it is untried as far as I am concerned but it was from a Microsoft Site. It might help!

That can't be a Microsoft site. There are ads..

I was scurrying thru the Processes tab to see what was going on, but sure enough, it's a winner ! It tries to collect every filetype in your system. I refreshed and sure enough .CNF was in there.."Remove file association" was faded not clickable. The "Delete file type" option worked flawlessly easily. They are now iconless :]

It was a bit bold of me to call it a MS Site I agree but most, if not all of the contributors are Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVP) so the advice is likely to be sound.
Anyway delighted that it worked for you. Sorry if I didn't fully understand the problem in the first place but I am from the "old school" and get a bit confused with modern phraseology
Am reporting this topic as resolved if that is OK with you. A lot of the regular members here use the "New Posts" facility to see what questions they might be able to answer and the resolved tick does help them to go straight to those topics that still need help!

mitchell..! I forgot to edit the subject with [S0LVED] in the beginning. Hahah, old school yes. I'm 80s..just barely, 1989 hahah, screw the 90s ! "likely to be sound" is a neat phrase, too. :]

Actually the best way to get a topic marked as solved is to click the little red triangle at top right and just type in "Solved" A Moderator will do the rest!
