How long is normal for a Windows 7 update?

Hi,

my PC's been installing a windows update for more than two hours by now. There were 19 updates to install, 1-15 went well, but Nr. 16 is taking an eternity. How do I know that it's actually doing something and not just stuck? What happens, if I force quit the system from the power off button?

I'm using Windows 7 home premium 32bit on a Lenovo G555, about 6 months old. It has 4GB ram and a 2,something dual core processor, but I can't remember the exact specs.

Some updates take a few minutes, some do take a long time. Only update I've ever had that was hours though was the SP1 update. I'd recommend leaving it a bit longer.

I had a problem with an update out of the last batch for .net 3.5 or something like that. It didn't delay as long as it did in your case, but when the updates completed it said that one update had failed (the one that I mentioned). When I tried again the second time, there were two other new updates listed, so I tried all three and it hung again.

Finally, when I ran the .net update all by itself, it went as it should.

Updates

I don't know if any one has ever encountered this or not. I'll just mention it. Some times when there are numerous updates and you click on them to review them some will be checked and others will not be checked. I am not refering to optional updates.

I leave them as they are and go back and get the ones that were not checked. Somehow I got the idea that MS did not want them all installed at the same time. I started this practice after checking one off and it failed on the install with the rest of them and I had to go back and get it again. Does this make sense?

That makes sense, but there was a time when Windows Update automatically insisted on updating files like that before updating any others. I guess the times has changed.
