Solved How long is "Too Long" for Win 7 Update?

About one hour and 20 min ago, I shutdown my Win 7 64 bit system because I had one update pending. Of course, it says "Do not power off or unplug your machine."

So, how much longer should I wait?
And then what should I do? Power off by pushing the Start button for 5 sec, or
Just unplug it?

Any ideas what I can expect when I restart it?
Will it be able to be restarted?
Will I have to restart in Safe Mode?
Should there be a Restore Point before the Update?

Thanks!
Yogi

Well, after 2+ hours of waiting, I gave up and pushed the start button for 5 sec, then pushed again to restart. I got the warning that Windows did not shut down properly...blah blah. I just selected to Start Normally, and it did, albeit somewhat slower than usual.

The orange "Update Needed" Icon is still there on my Windows Start button. All that I can think of is to do a full System AV Scan with BitDefender and then turn off BD before the next shutdown.

If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know.

Hi Y0GI

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with Windows Update. It is probably best to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and see if the computer can sort out its own problems. If that fails then you must remove the Update Installation manually.

Hope that helps.

Hi, iko22

I didn't know that there WAS an "Update Troubleshooter!"
I'll give that a try and see what it finds.

Thank you very much!

Where do I find this "Windows Update Troubleshooter"? I did a search on the start button but got nothing.

I must apologize for taking so long to get back to you folks that offered possible solutions. Please forgive me!

I took a chance and shutdown the computer a second time. For some reason, there was no indication of "Wait while update is being installed......etc." It just shutdown normally, and I haven't had any startup nor shutdown problems since.

I checked the Update History and it shows that all updates have been installed successfully. There are only 2 Optional Updates pending:

2019-01 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4480955)

Download size: 240.1 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Optional

Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

At this point, it seems to be running fine and I am inclined to "Let well enough alone," unless you folks can recommend otherwise?

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions!

Yes, I can recommend you do several things.

First check for file corruptions that might have occurred during abnormal shutdowns. Use CHKDSK C: /f and SFC /SCANNOW to perform the integrity checks.

Secondly, create a manual restore point. This will mark the point in time you considered your OS to be stable. If something happens again, while updating, then you have a restore point where the OS is stable.
