How long to complete: "Attempting repairs... Repairing disk errors"?

I'm trying to repair a crashed Win 7 computer. I booted off the installation disc and ask it to do a repair. Currently it's "Attempting repairs... Repairing disk errors..." It says this may take over an hour and it's been doing this for just over 2 days (blue bars running across the screen). How long should I keep on waiting? Is there any alternate solution?
Please help...
Thanks.

It takes a while to run that, but not nearly that long. It can take a couple of hours depending on the size of the hard drive and the errors it finds but not nearly 2 days. I would try to run check disk from this tutorial, if you can't boot you would need to use option 2. I would try running chkdsk C: /F /R

Hi Essenbe,

Thanks for your reply. I have a DELL Inspiron N4020 (64 bit,4MB, 250 HDD) I am not so clued up with IT stuff but I know that neither option 1 or 2 would work because when i start up the computer It ask me to select ( "Attempting repairs... Repairing disk errors..."). when I cancel it, there is a pop up window -Start up repair message with ''Error code= 0x0''. This means that I can only see a blue screen ant therefore cannot acces Windows ''Start menu'' to attempt the run check disk!!

I don't want to lose the data on the hard disk, What else can i do to attempt fixing this issue??

Thanks in advance for answers...

If you have the Installation DVD or a repair CD that you made, you can boot to that instead of the hard drive and get to a command prompt. If it is the installation DVD, on the first screen, do not select your language, hold down the shift key and press F10, and you will get a command prompt window.
