How long will you use windows 7?

Sicne xp support is ending, and its the last OS to use the actual microsoft update website the following will be shut down when xp support ends:

  1. XP activation servers
  2. Phone support for xp-unless extended contract for buisnesses
  3. Windows updates. Service packs and windows updates posted to the site for manual updating will be unavailable. Their website here will be shut down for manual xp updating via their website. And trust me, Microsoft is excited about shutting that site down.
  4. KB articles will still be available for XP, like they still have KBs for windows 98.

According to this link, what you're saying I don't think is true. It says XP users will still be able to register and also download updates that existed prior to 4/8/2014:

That's my understanding to. No new updates, but the current updates and activation will still be available. For a while anyway. As an example Windows 98 worked that way for years after its end of support date. If you have a factory installed OEM version of XP it activates via the BIOS SLIC table anyway, not online. All those PC's will just keep on trucking.

Hey, I've been to Melbourne. I actually went by ship to the Shell Oil Terminal in Geelong, and then I took the train to Melbourne. Then I took the subway to Huntington or Huntingdale to get some electronic parts to repair a teleprinter onboard the ship. I LOVED Melbourne, Australia. I can't ever remember what state Melbourne is in though. It is either Queeland or Victoria I think. We went to a club in Geelong called "The Wool Exchange." That was over 20 years ago though.

It would have been Huntingdale (A very old Melbourne suburb), and Melbourne is in Victoria.

A lot has changed in the last 20 years. Not all of it for the better, lol.

.

That's a good point. In Australia, we have limited upload speed of 1.4 MBps (translates to about 90KBps actual maximum) upload. Rumour is that ISPs here are doing that to cut costs, yet we have some of the most expensive Internet costs in the world.

Have to agree, any OS that is largely cloud based has got to be a no-no here.

I read an article yesterday in the Canadian news that said that we were 53rd in the world in internet service speeds. Australia must be pretty close to us on that list because yours is only a little faster than my upload speed.

I can't see a viable cloud based OS until ISPs get their acts together and stop throttling us with low speeds for huge money. I wouldn't put it past MS to make Win 9 or 10 cloud based, but I don't see it selling well in much of the world.

It's amazing how things come full circle in so short a time. The whole idea of having a PC on your desk instead of a terminal was to allow you to have locally running programs and data. The network administrator couldn't make sure you had "problems" logging on just because he was a) bored b) didn't like you c) had a friend who'd like your job or d) all of the above.

Now we are being pushed back to the same old theme of centralized control. Well if some dude I don't know is going to play IT Guy (tm) then I at least want the networking to be fiber and free. No bandwidth limits or copyright infringement complaints. Just ass kicking connectivity. I'll just have to find out who the IT Guy is and get on his good side.

If they used your suggestions, a "Cloud OS" would almost be viable.
