Hello,
To those who have just bought Windows 7 Home Premium on a new computer (or to those who can recall the answer), how much space was used by Windows 7 (without your adding any programs or media or files)?

On our brand new computer, 29.5 GB is already used space.

I installed Win 7 Professional on my Dell Mini 9 and it took 6GB of my 8GB SSD.
I then bought a 16GB SSD and Win 7 Ultimate took up 12GB initially and was able to drop it to under 10GB by deleting some of the update files.

How come my C Drive/ Properties shows 29.5 GB of used space? I gotta investigate the matter.

I'm confused. In
(C: /Properties, it says "Used Space" is 29.5 GB (31,703,XXX bytes),
but when I go the the folder listings of C: Drive and do a "Select All" then check the Properties, I'm told that the size is 16.5GB.

The Disk properties is accurate, the bitmap which maps every bit on the HDD is used, merely counting the occupied bits versus the empty bits you get the exact used space. While the properties of a folder goes though the file system which is govern by ACLs, traversing down the file system tree, places you are not allowed are ignored. There is also the issue that hardlinks will be counted multiple times.

Is it 100% safe to delete the update files? I'd like to cut down on the fat.
What else can I safely delete?

C: Properties is showing all the used space on your boot drive...not just Windows.

patio, yes, but all the used space on my boot drive is all Windows stuff (since we haven't added anything much to the computer after purchase).

The missing space is system restore points. Click on Start, right click on My Computer, choose properties, click on System Protection. Highlight, Local Disk C and click on Configure. Here you will see how much space is being used by all of these restore points. 5-10GB of space here is not unheard of and won't show up when you add everything up using Explorer.

pparks, I've deleted the restore points and C Drive / Properties shows used space equals 19.2 GB. That's still a lot, especially considering this is Win7 Home Premium, and not Win7 Ultimate or Pro.
