How much space does XP need?

its listed as Nforce Serial ATA controller and Standard Dual Channel IDE controller

Thats interesting? Mine isn't listed under IDE ATA/ATPI controllers, its listed separately under "Storage Controllers". I don't know what that means though? I don't actually have anything connected to my SATA ports at the moment. I will be switching from an IDE drive to SATA as soon as my Income TAX refund arrives.

Are talking about the BIOS or device Manager? I'm referring to how its listed in Windows Device manager, which is I believe what he has shown in his screen shot. His might be in "IDE" mode and thus listed under IDE ATA/ATPI controllers instead of Under "Storage Controllers". I'd have to reboot and go in and see what mode mine is in, but I'm guessing its AHCI.

Maybe he does and its just not labeled "IDE" His owners manual should tell him what the difference is between the three modes he listed earlier, SATA, RAID, and AHCI. I'm just wondering whats the difference between SATA and AHCI? My BIOS is pretty basic, my only options are SATA enable, disable, and SATA RAID enable, disable. Looks like I don't have an IDE mode so its a good thing I'm running windows 7 and not XP.

What is that "Primary IDE Master" I guess you'd have to have an IDE HDD for that?

Yeah, his motherboard is like mine and has one (legacy) IDE controller built into it. My IDE hard drive shows up in that section of my BIOS.

well i think basically the general consensus here is give up or buy an IDE hard drive, thanks for your ideas guys, you have both been very helpful, now to go and find someone at packard bell to shoot...

not an IDE hard drive i can use i think my parents pc has an IDE one, so i guess ill just have to test it on the VM then hand it over to them

If it looks like a legitimate Microsoft CD I wouldn't sweat it too much. It might take a while but I think you could put the CD in your optical drive and scan it with your currently installed anti-virus app. If you can find out what the MD5 checksum is supposed to be for your version you could check that to see if it matches. If it matches then the odds are very good that it hasn't been altered in any way.
