How to access hidden files

I upgraded fro vista to windows 7 and thought I was saving all of my files and desktop icons, but I must have done it wrong because I have a fresh install and everything is in my windows.old folder.

Is there a way I can transfer my applications and files from that file to my new windows? Drag and drop doesn't seem to work with applications like Quicken and Microsoft office for example.

Programs can't be just copied and paste to another folder .
