Hey. I know this question has sort of been asked before, but the question is not exactly what I want to do.

First off, I have tried so many programs to change the icons in the following files:
imageres.dll
shell32.dll
I have tried to edit both of them in these folders, the System32, and the SysWOW64 folder with no success.

I have tried using Microangelo, Axialis IconWorkshop Resource Hacker and Restorator, non of them could save over the files.

I have taken owner and granted my self full permission of the files, still nothing.

I have managed to edit my icons to be what I want, but not the way I wanted to. The way I did it was with Stardock's IconPackager, but I don't know how it works, because it did not edit those dll files.

Here are some questions I have.
Do I have to edit both of the files that are in the System32 folder and the SysWOW64 folder for all the icons to be changed?

How do I edit these icons and put the icons that I want in? I need the .dll file to be modified so when I put it in my Windows 7 customized install disk, the icons will be how I want them.

So is there a program that I can use so I can edit all the icons and save them all I want without a problem?

Thanks.

When editing the icons in the dll files, save the output as dll file in somewhere like desktop, and then replace the original with the modded one .

Edit all icons in such as imageres.dll , save the result as imageres.dll in desktop, and now replace the imageres.dll in system32 with the imageres.dll in desktop . When done, rebuild your icon cache .

This process works for me .

ya ummm, I have a few questions. I don't know what I did, but maybe one of you guys can tell me what I did wrong. I edited like 3 or 4 icons in the imageres.dll and the shell32.dll, the ones that are in the System32 folder, not the SysWOW64 folder. I then used Icons workshop to rebuild the icon cach, I clicked it a few times. Then I clicked Repair Icon Cach a few times. Went back to clicking Rebuild Icon Cach. Then I ran the following commands.

Taskkill /im Explorer.exe /f
del "C:\%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\IconCach.db" /a
Shitdown /r /t 00

Basically I typed in the commands that Arc gave me a link to, but just my way, but the same, just with less lines. The computer restarted, when The log on screen came up, everything was black. Well only the log on wallpaper was. I tried to log in I got an error, something about the explorer. I restarted, repeatedly pressed F8, enter on repair my computer. Open the command prompt, and expanded the imageres.dll and shell32.dll, and everything started working.

What did I do wrong?
In order for me change the folder Icons, do I need to change both imgeres.dll and shell32.dll in both of the folders System32 and SysWOW64?
Do those command that you gave me actually rebuild the icon cach automatically when the computer starts up again if it is deleted?

I can't even edit the dll files now. What program do you guys use to edit the dll files?

There are complete icon packs with installers. You will get all icons changed, but of course, with the icons in the pack. Mr.Grim has some great ones, including the Full Glass Blue I use

You can also easily change individual icons with AdSevenIconChanger
