How to change automated save destination?

I am having an issue that is not a big deal, but is very irritating to me.

When I open a windows office file from the internet (Word or Powerpoint) and I then I go to save it via "save as", it automatically opens the temp file as the save destination, not the folder I most recently had open, or the folder where I've saved the previous 20 files I've downloaded.

Is there a way to direct the default save file to open not as temp but as what I want it to?

So this makes me think my problem is that when I open a file it downloads it to the temp file, so that is the location where Windows thinks I want to save it... In order to fix the save problem I have to change the download destination...

Yes.

Whenever you download a file you should see a pop-up at the bottom of your screen asking whether you want to run the file, save it, or save as.

If you choose Run, it will do that without saving the download.

If you choose Save, it will default to the Downloads folder under Documents.

If you choose Save As, you can save the download to a location of your choice.

Whenever I download large files in particular I always save them to a folder on my external hard drive as backup so that they are there for the future if I need them again.

I read it through. I think part of my problem is that I was using Firefox, which doesn't behave the same way. If I click on a link with a file, it opens it without asking for a download destination. I switched to IE and updated the destination folder as that tutorial says, and it worked.

If you have the file open in Word and saving it from there, check your default Word file locations.

In Word 2010 click File > Options > Save

Check your File Locations, and see if changing them there helps.
