My new desktop came with W7 and a new flat screen monitor. The monitor is of the new style, much wider than it is high. Consequently, everything looks shortened way down--it's awful.

How can I make the display area less wide, w/o making it shorter?

Get a non-widescreen monitor...That would be what I would say. Otherwise changing outside of the native resolution will just create an even worse image for you.

Right-click the desktop and select screen resolution - adjust settings there. Otherwise use the guide to update your drivers in my sig and use your graphics card control panel.

Have you tried Right Clicking on the desktop, then "Screen Resolution"?

You can change the resolution there, I don't know if different aspect ratios will be available to you, usually every VGA has its different list of resolutions.

Thanks for the fast replies. I right-clicked the desktop and it says the setting is 1024 X 768. Well, it's more like 2000 X 768! The monitor is an Asus--maybe one of the monitor controls will let me change it. I'll try---.

The "recommended" size is way too small. I finally managed to get it to "maintain aspect ratio"--it kept reverting to full screen, full of distortion. I just hope it sticks.
