How to CHMOD in win 7

I have installed some software for hosting my own file sharing system

but i need to CHMOD some of the folders

am i right in thinking you cant CHMOD files on win 7 ?

if it can be done any clues how

all google brings up is posts saying you dont need to when on win 7

Tried that it failed

linux seems to be the only real way with out the hassles

its only on a machine thats acting as a server

chmod is a command that changes the mode of a file. That pretty much sets the permissions. I don't see why you would have to use Linux or chmod exclusively to make this happen.

It sounds like you have some software that is linux based...and for that, you will need to be running a Linux machine.

Am I missing something or can you not achieve the same effect as CHMOD by right clicking on the file and select "properties","security" tab, "advanced"? You may be able to achieve what you want just going as far as the "security" tab bit but there is greater flexibability under advanced. Word of caution though... make sure you don't lock youself out of the file!!

Most hosting software is linux based but does allso function ok on windows

the creater of the software used ftp to access my files but failed to chmod them as win 7 just reverterd them back to readable only

He also has customers using his software on win 7 machine with no problems at all

i have spent hours playing with the permmision and security tabs but it fails

so i figure the answer is to put linux on my hosting machine and run it from there

and put the software on my machine and make a virtual site on my win 7 and play some more

Thats suggests something different between your Win7 and the customers. Have you tried turning UAC off?

Cygwin would also do the trick.

Right click on the file or folder and edit the security permitions for the relevant user.

Cygwin is great....its like a Windows version of CShell. Hopefully you can chmod +rw *.*

As far as I understand, Cygwin is not a magical way to run Linux. It does contain all usual Unix commands in it, but it is an emulator layer and thus the file system remains Windows-based. Thus chmod is rather limited in its use. In earlier versions of Cygwin it was totally useless, I am not sure about the latest version, but I do not think it is able to actually edit native Windows permissions. And clearly that's what you want to do, edit permissions. Thus, as pointed out by z3r010, you just need to edit permissions for the relevant user to access files in question.

Note, that this "relevant user" is not necessarily you. I do not know what software you are using but the very same Cygwin, in order to create a ssh server needs to create a special user account. This user would need to be able to access files as well. Maybe you've got something like this there.

The simplest thing, if this is your home server and security is not the top priority, is to simply allow access to the files or folders in question to "Everyone" (without quotes of course). This would completely eliminate any permissions-related problems.

mine looks just like it but with error messages about file permissions

here is the error

no matter how i set permissions its always the same error

And before you attempt to change the permissions, you may need to log in as a true administrator on your win7 box.

Martin, if you set your files accessible to Everyone and you still get the same error, then check whether your firewall (Windows Firewall or whatever Internet Security you are running) allows your software to access your system. In addition, if you are using a router, make sure that you have set the port forwarding properly. If any of these are not your problem, you may want to make sure that that's the case by trying to access at least something by this software - I do not recall now, is your problem with specific files or with the connection in general.

its just 2 folders the machine that host has the firewall turned off

the router is set as i was hosting my own forum and the said machine is also infront of the router in DMZ

all connections are fine just 2 folders need to be set to 777 and a few .txt need to be set to 777

(the .txt are set with no problems)

Did you try to give full control of the said 2 folders to Everyone?
