How to edit rating with video files?

I have a lot of folders with videos that I would like to be able to sort by rating. I know you can change the star rating with pictures and mp3s, but can you with videos or folders? Or can I make a custom sort option?

You can change the rating of a video by pulling up the status area and clicking the stars.



Or of course you can do it in WMP in detail mode.

You can sort and group by rating by using the more... option and checking Rating.

To add a little to what kado897 has suggested you can also Right click on the movie go to Properties go to the Details tab.


You can change some of the details there also.


Then right click inside the folder and go to Sort by go down to More.


Choose Details that you want and click OK then click Apply on the property window.


You should have the new detail you want.

I forgot that MS always gives you at least three ways to do something.

I just wanted to add a little to it, and somehow it posted that little bit and then I had to go back and put in what I wanted to do.

Thanks for the replies, but I have tried both of your methods and for some reason, I can't edit anything in the "Details" section at all. Does Windows only let you edit certain types of video files?
I also know of the sorting options, but since I can't edit the stars, there is no point in sorting by rating so I figured if I could make a custom sorting option, I could make a pseudo rating that way.

Most of my videos are .mkv files by the way.

I just tried it on a .mp4 video and it let me rate them...so why can't I rate any type of video?

Well I'm not really an expert on this but on my system I only have MP4, WMV, MOV and MPG. I don't seem to be able to edit MPG but the others are OK.

Just converted a video to MKV. can't edit that either. In fact can't play it in WMP. I don't think MKV is natively supported by windows.

Yeah, I have the Combined Community Codec Pack installed.
Well I guess there I guess there is no way around this...

Well there may be third party tag editors out there that you could use but not all containers support all fields. You might want to try googling MKV tag editor.
