I just tried charging my Ipod Classic and Ipod Touch from my Vaio. Having had nothing but bad experiences with apple software I have chosen to keep my Windows 7 platform an Apple free zone.

It worked OK but the dang iPod Touch has changed some of my settings!

I normally use the remove media icon in the little window that opens up from the little white triangle in the bottom right, but now it's not there! Instead it comes up on the task bar when I insert something.

not a major problem, but still I am not happy about it, certainly when I've had this machine running problem free since I got it. I don't want apple introducing problems into my new computer. I have enough problems with my Macbook as it is.

How do I get this back then? I tried going into cutomize and choosing show icon and modifications, but that just makes it come up on the taskbar. Maybe that's better. Either way not happy and want things to go back to the way they were.

p.s. Apple sucks

No guarantees but you might try System Restore to return your computer to a date/time prior to charging the iPod Touch.

   Warning
A System Restore will also uninstall programs and drivers that were installed after the date of the selected restore point.

Another long shot, but you could also try rebuilding your icon cache.

And an even longer shot is to run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) It will look for damaged or corrupt system files. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

I think marsmimar is taking this a bit too far.

From the customize panel (the same you used to set "show icon and modifications") you can also choose "hide icon and notifications" if you want it to shut up and ALWAYS stay in the hidden icon window.
Which seems to be the original setting before apple stuff did its magic.

Tell us if it works.

Do you have any removable devices connected when the icon is not displayed ?

If not, attach a device such as a USB flash drive and see if the icon shows up.

Thanks for the replies guys I meant to get back on this, I sorted it out in the end. No problems (I hope) Don't like it when stuff messes with my set up. Is there any way to stop devices automatically installing drivers on your computer? I only want to use the USB port to charge my iPod up from my VAIO.

Marsimar- first thing I did was a sfc /scannow and it didn't throw up any problems. Also used CCleaner.

According to the OP's original post:

I was simply trying to offer some additional options to get the icon back to where it originally was. My sincerest apologies, bobafetthotmail, for "...taking this a bit too far." I certainly didn't mean to offend your sensibilities.

I think marsmimar took this just the right distance ;) Offering escalated steps to try to address the problem the OP clearly laid out. A Guy
