In windows Xp ctrl + alt+ delete brings task manager right away, but in Win 7 it goes to this annoying blue start screen with 5 options...

How can I get task manager to to to well...taks manager in one step like in XP?

Hi Dwarf,

This works ok, but after a decade of using ctrl + alt + del...

I can type that combination in fractions of seconds...isn't there a way to use the same set of keys?

Sorry no there isn't, that I know of.

Just like in XP Alt+F4, with no programs running, brought up the shut down window where you could hit R for Reboot and U to shut down now you have a screen that is set to shut down and you have to then hit the Enter key to shut down or the R key to select Reboot then the Enter key.

And You and I thought MS was making the system easier to use, NOT. In Win 8 there is NO way to shut the system down from the Metro Tile interface. Go figure.

Yep...I don't know why MS keeps doing stuff like that...if it ain't broken don't fix it!

However today I finally went from Xp to Win 7, and after making it better with Windows Shell and adjusting for best performance and a few other tweaks, it feels and runs like XP, so pretty happy with it ;)

Now will I move to Windows 8, NO WAY IN HELL!...;)

I'll probably stay with 7 for 5-10 years or so, I don't like changes to my OS.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC (In Windows XP as well) is actually the real keyboard shortcut to launch task manager. CTRL + ALT + DELETE opening task manager on Windows XP was a configuration option that was disabled on consumer versions of Windows by default. Versions setup for business had a different setting which opened a dialog similar to the one in Windows 7.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control-Alt-Delete#Windows_NT_.28and_later_versions.29
If the computer is configured as a part of a domain or it runs Windows 2000, the combination brings up the "Windows Security" dialog, where the user can lock the computer, change their password, log out, shut the computer down, or invoke the Task Manager. This is the default behavior in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, regardless of whether or not the computer is part of a domain. The options presented can be controlled through the use of Group Policy.

If Windows XP is not connected to a domain
  • and the Welcome Screen and fast user switching are turned on, Ctrl-Alt-Del directly invokes the Task Manager.
  • and the Welcome Screen and fast user switching are turned off, Ctrl-Alt-Del will open the Windows Security Dialog, as described above.

Learn to use CTRL + SHIFT + ESC
