5.9 is about the best score you'll get with a single HDD. If you want a higher score, probably have to buy a SSD.

an SSD is a different kind of storage device then what you have currently, WD Caviar Black. That is a mechanical storage device (HDD). SSD's don't have moving parts, they use solid state memory. I gave you a link that you can read about them in my first post. They are very expensive, and the capacity is not very big compared to the price/capacity of a regular HDD. Not worth getting just to raise your WEI score.

Yes it does considerably in some situations. But I would do a little reading on how they work, different models and sizes vs prices before jumping in and buying one.

Yes. I use a 30GB OCZ Vertex (about $120) as my Windows 7 system/boot/applications drive and use a 300GB standard HDD for my user profile, games, page file etc. My WEI disk score is 6.6

I was also thinking about increasing my HDD related performance somehow. I have a notebook, so I could only put one HDD in. I do not want to spend a fortune on a large SSD, so I do not have much choice. BTW: Would ReadyBoost with a large and fast SD-card increase the performance of my system? (Currently, I have 4 GB of RAM). Or was it possible to install Win7 onto an SD-card..?

You can use an adapter in a desktop PC to fit an SSD drive which is 2.5" into a 3.5" opening.

Personally, I just used Velcro on the back side of my SSD drive and velcroed it into an open area on my drive cage. Since there are no moving parts, it's safe to do this with an SSD drive.

I use an Intel X25-M Gen 2 80GB SSD for my OS and a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black for my storage drive. The performance on the Intel is great. My box boots faster, shuts down faster, loads games and apps almost instantly, and really reduces scan times for virus checkers and malware checkers.

Windows and Linux enthusiast. Logitech G35 Headset.
Can someone explain why swapping my 640GB Western Digital AAKS for a 1TB WD Caviar Black FALS would drop my HD score from 7.7 to 5.9? And it's not even my boot/OS drive!
My boot drive is a 40GB Intel V-series G2 SSD that has the same amount of free space today when I redid WEI as it did when I first built the system and tested it a couple weeks ago and got the 7.7. The WD drive is just for storing data and software. I just copied the folders over from the 640GB to the 1TB drive. Everything's fine. Except for the WEI score.

Seems rather crazy for it to drop by 1.8, no? The new drive has more free space and I'm pretty sure the performance is similar if not nearly identical between the AAKS and the FALS. Also, doesn't WEI specifically test the drive where Windows 7 is installed? If so, I wonder what's changed/wrong with my SSD. I ran the Intel toolbox optimizer on it to make sure it's still optimized. It came back Green, meaning it optimized the SSD and it should be good to go.

Any ideas? :/
