How to keep USB power to UPS during sleep?

Hello:

Barely literate forum noob here; not sure if I am in the right forum for my query.
I have been wrestling w/this issue since Vista...

Issue:
Want to configure power settings for desktop PC so that USB power to UPS can be maintained during sleep.

The UPS software can do a managed system shutdown during a power outage only if the UPS can "communicate" with the computer. As I understand it, Vista and 7 cut power to USB ports during sleep, breaking that connection.

Is there a way to do this that won't screw up the other installed USB devices such as keyboard & mouse & monitor, or the use of external USB flash drives or hard drives?

What I've tried so far:
In Vista, my only good workaround was to devise a power plan that never put the computer to sleep (only the display turned off).

That's what I'm doing now on this new Win7 64-bit box, but I assume there's way to devise something more definitive and more energy-efficient.

Trouble is, I find all the options& settings confusing:
-- Device manager for the USB hub: "allow the computer to turn off..." and "allow the device to wake..."
-- Power settings: sleep vs. hybrid vs. hibernate; "USB selective suspend"; turn off HDD vs. turn off computer.

Secondarily: It seems that Win7 also cuts power to the Ethernet card during sleep, breaking the connection to the router. Is there a way to fix this, as well?

Assuming there is some sort of solution, can someone please provide step-by-step instructions suitable for an old fuddy-duddy, self-taught geezer?

(System details are entered in my profile.)

I really appreciate your help.

I think you have a desktop. Sometimes they have a jumper which controls voltage flow to the ports. see if you can find that and fiddle.
Otherwise check in the bios for USB power settings and fiddle.

Try disabling USB Slective Suspend. You say you do have a USB hub? Is it powered?

Re-opening old thread - kindly indulge

Sorry to re-open this, but still looking for assistance.

Problem: Need to configure the myriad sleep and related device manager and power management options to allow the system to sleep/hybrid sleep/hibernate (?) without cutting power to the USB devices, especially my UPS with battery backup.

If I am correct, W7 cuts power to USB ports during sleep. On my system, that breaks the USB connection to my UPS, and would prevent the software from doing a managed shutdown of the system in the event of a power failure.

Despite much effort, I cannot find the correct settings in all the places (power options, device manager, etc etc) to allow the computer to keep the USB connection to the UPS even during sleep.

My only workaround (since the days of Vista) has been to devise a power plan that never shuts down the HDD.

(I don't even understand the difference between sleep/hybrid sleep/hibernation.
And I know nothing about hardware.:()

@Desslok, no I don't have a USB hub. I may have misspoken from my interpretation of what I see in device manager.

@Bill2: Yes, it is a desktop. But your instructions are a little vague for a total computer noob like me (esp re: things like BIOS and hardware...)

So,
1) Is there some way to do this that would be understandable for a noob?
2) If not, how is one expected to install a UPS/battery backup device with power management software, if Windows won't let the software do its job of shutting down the system properly if the power fails?

Thanks very, very much for your assistance,

MM

To keep the usb ports powered during sleep:
Under power options
-click on "change plan settings" for the plan your system is using.
-click on "change advanced power settings"
-expanded the usb settings by clicking the "+"
--the "USB selective suspend setting" You want it set to disabled
--click apply

In your BIOS you'll want to make sure that "usb wake.." is enabled. Look for power management settings.
