You keep asking for the "location" of the firmware so I'm thinking maybe your not aware of what it is. The firmware is the code that is stored on a micro chip in the device. Its like the BIOS code on your motherboard. To update it you have to flash new code into the micro chip. If done incorrectly the device could cease to function. Commonly refereed to as being bricked, as in "as useful as". The Firmware and driver for the device are two distinctly different things. You need both but most people only ever update the driver.

Of course, this is not the default driver I got when I purchased my laptop.I installed windows 7 recently also the drivers. So better use dell support cd to install it, right?

As has been mentioned, you seem to be confusing firmware with software.

Software enables the hardware to work with Windows, firmware configures what the hardware can do.

You will only be asked to update firmware by the hardware manufacturer or your computer supplier.

The idea is to download the firmware update to a location on your hard drive.

Having done that, click the Search button (in your screenshot) and navigate to the location where you save the update. From there you can install it.

As mentioned, the Dell firmware update may get unzipped to a different location on your hard drive. See the Dell instructions on how to locate the file and run the update. Finally I came to conclusion..
I upgraded to new driver. CD(reading/writing) is almost working, but problems in reading DVD's, sometimes for CD's also. So it might be a hardware problem..

You don't say whether you have a laptop or desktop computer.

If you have a desktop, the DVD drive can be replaced easily and cheaply.
