How to make a program start at windows start-up:



Run - These are the most common start-up locations for programs to install auto start from. By default these keys are not executed in Safe mode. If you prefix the value of these keys with an asterisk, *, it will run in Safe Mode.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (this entry may have to be created completely it will run the program for all users of the computer)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (this entry should already be there as the currentuser of the machine no creation necessary)

Start by typing "regedit" in the start menu search bar and hit return. Then navigate to the following entry. All are work is going to be done in the right-side of the registry editor window.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is the location that I want to put in my registry entry for my program that I want to start at windows start-up. I want to put speed-fan in my registry star-up since it doesn't have an auto run entry selection in the program options.

So I navigate to where speed-fan was installed and copy the address of it by right clicking on the address bar and select "copy address as text".


Right click this address line and "Copy address as text"




Then I swing back to registry editor and create a New String Value and name it Speed-Fan.


Then right click on the New String Value and paste the address of the speed-fan executable in the Value data line like in the screen shot. Type in the name of the executable like below then click "OK".


Remember you'll have some typing to do. You'll have to type the name of the executable since copy and paste of the address wont pick that up.


Your done.
In the screenshots you don't need the " in front of the entry.
To undo just delete the string value that you created.

While this is true how then do you use different switches and such?

I don't allow programs to start with Windows except AV and gadgets. I don't want freeloaders on my RAM, CPU and Startup which can spy on me and can wait until I open them to run.

I do sometimes allow Speedfan to startup to watch temps and try variable fan speeds during troubleshooting, but the settings to open minimized and display temps in SysTray are found in the program. A member here told me how to paste it in Startup folder some years ago.

You can also copy shortcuts to the startup folder, and in those shortcuts you can specify any flags on the program you're running in the 'Target' box.

For example, "...\UpdateChecker.exe" -background

You can also open the startup folder by typing Shell:Startup into Start/Search. Then hit Enter and drag the shortcut from the desktop into it.

While msconfig will allow you to control applications that create startup entries it doesn't allow for you to put startup entries for applications that don't create them. That is what were discussing here, while there are a few ways of doing that, like applications like Ace Utilities will allow you to create startup entries in the registry and doing as Greg said and CreepinJesus have stated, the point of my first post was to show how to do it through the registry which is simple.

You create a "string" enter the "value" and click ok. It's that simple or you can edit what's already there from other programs.
