How to permanently save a restore point

I recall having this same dilemna and after not finding the setting, interfering program, corruption, etc. responsible ran a Repair Install which by reinstalling the OS fixed the issue. However there are some bad settings it will not set right.

That said if this is just one of several issues you have which are causing WIn7 to not run perfectly you might consider taking the time to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 using the tools and methods which work best, then capture an image to use if it ever becomes irreparable again.

It also doesn't matter when or if I create them myself, once a week or once a day, no difference. Once a few hours past, all restores are deleted. No matter what. Even keeping my computer idle with nothing having downloaded, updated and no tasks scheduled, it still deletes any restore within X amount of hours created.

Why don't you get a HDD solely for System Images. Get Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download and you can set your Windows to make backup images as often as you like. If your files become corrupt, you can install the image of your backups in a short time and be good to go. This sounds like more what you want than System Restore.

Okay the restore point is still there 24 hours later after increasing to 20%. It's still totaling under 500MB in size (all the restores) so time to just give the middle finger to MS on this one and move the hell on.

I will go for the repair install first as this seems like a better initial step than having to resetup certain apps that don't have an export feature. So with a repair install, all my installed programs will remain and still be functional? I only ask because I assume a repair install resets the registry and not sure what kind of issues that would cause.

I'll invest in an HDD for backups too at some point thanks for the suggestion
