How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Not sure if its mentioned yet, but avoid KB3102810
KB3102810 has value; especially for those starting with a clean/fresh install of W7 or a factory reset. Please see this post. There are other treads that show KB3102810 drastically shorten the Windows Update scan time and solved high CPU usage while scanning for W7 updates and while installing W7 updates.

If the goal is to have a W7 installation that cannot install W10, then avoid KB3102810 and its benefit to W7.

Completely agree with UNI.
I've been installing the Windows update client updates as I've actually found them beneficial to my system. They've decreased RAM and CPU usage and that one in particular has resolved the long scan times on my VM installs. I installed that update before running WU for the first time.
What was taking hours has been drastically shortened, the last one took 20 minutes to pick up all the updates.
The only downside to this is that it does include the Windows 10 downloader/prep.
I've still included it on my list, which I'll update soon (as I've also discovered a couple new Windows 8.1 updates), for anyone who wants to completely skip all the WU client updates. But for me it's been a benefit, so I install them.
As long as you have updates set to check only and untick the "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important" then there shouldn't be any issues with it auto installing.
As an extra precaution, use the group policy object or reg workaround.
My advice, if people (especially on new installs) want to reduce the painfully long wait for updates, and are happy using the workaround, then I would install it.
If you want to completely avoid anything to do with 10 and don't want to use workarounds, but can put up with the long wait times on new installs then skip all the WU client updates.

LaybackBear, that is exactly what happened after I built my new system, changed from a Gigabyte to an Asus board. Audio was OK on the Giga board, but KB3097877 killed my Realtek audio. I managed to remove all the 10 nasties and hide them, seems OK now.

jadinolf, my apologies to Her Ladyship, who probably doesn't give a hoot!:D

morph000, as I once said to my (ex-Pom) NSW mate from childhood, why are you colonials such devotees of Conspiracy Theory?:p

Conspiracy Theory is one thing, FACTS and reality another.

I have no intention of making it personal in this forum, but it's clear you have no serious understanding of what's happening in the world or how what is happening now is just 7,000 years of human history repeating itself. I'd say you spend no time at all in the top financial forums, sites and blogs out there.
I spend an average of 2 hours a day on them and have since the GFC and have saved EVERY article, video and document of interest since then. I CHOSE to be informed and do whatever I can to protect my future.
I'd be happy to debate any and all areas you choose to, from the big lie of global warming to socio-political and economic history, predictive cycles, human nature, terrorism, false-flags etc.
So pick your forum and let me know

Here's some light reading for you before that:

Anyway, back onto topic - does anyone have any input on M$ Office updates as far as spying and telemetry goes? I see them as a significant risk too.

Without reading all 54 pages, is the initial post being updated so that one can see the complete lists of KBs that are associated with the guerrilla install of Win 10 . It seems MS is making it as difficult as possible, moving it from optional to recommended, increasing scan times if you "just say no" and it also keeps changing my setting from "check for updates but let me choose" to "never check".

There is no authoritative list of "W10 updates" - just various options.

Some people continue to install updates to the Windows Update Client to solve issues like long scan times and to make use of various settings to prevent W10's installation.

I had my W7 machine pretty much protected against W10 for about the last month. Now, MS is back with a vengeance, just want them to leave my W7 alone until they no longer support it. I have 3 W10 machines in the house...don't want/need a 4th.!!

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
1. I was trying to find out **if** the initial post was going to be updated ... this is common practice in many forums to save those following the thread from having to read pages and pages to get updated information. Often when someone creates a thread, it is a topic of interest for they, they come back, follow it and update it. Since only the OP can do this, was hoping the inquiry might spur such a response. For example:

The Radiator Volume Thread

or perhaps someone knew of another source of the requested information.

2. I have no desire to look at an entire list of authoritative updates, but merely an update of the list of 7 updates which initiated the thread topic ... those being ones which try and force a guerrilla install of Win 10.

A forum's usefulness is enhanced when a user can benefit from the experience of others, if anyone following the thread has this information in hand, it would make a fine addition and be very useful ... if it was easy enough to find w/o spending hours. Some participants are happy do do so.

If what I was hoping for does not happen, with the long weekend coming up next week, I will try and read thru the entire thread and collect the information from the various posts. Hopefully the OP (Tookeri) will see it and paste it into the original post as leaving it the middle of a thread makes it less useful. As someone who mas managed web forums going back almost 24 years, I'd rather not start a new thread and clutter the board with a duplicate topic.http://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=395301

I understand the concept and value of updating the OP. I just provided info indicating the likelihood of such an update.

If you do end up working your way thru this thread, you will see that different members think that different updates should be considered as "W10 updates". I doubt that Tookeri is going to try and create an authoritative list. Doing so could alienate someone.http://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=395301

If your goal is to avoid changing to W10, then you can just tell W7 not to do so.

If you are afraid of telemetry, then happy hunting for the offending updates.

The link I gave will take you to an information page for GWX Control Panel.
It is worth reading the information about the program and what it does.
It in particular handles deleting files already downloaded and ready to install without any permissions problems.
It will ask for Administrator permission only when required to handle certain tasks.
If you do not want Windows 10 the program will allow you to stop it.

I run it after windows updates to make sure it is not set to upgrade against my will.
Download the program, run it and fix your situation.

Good luck!

Yes I am using GWX Control Panel v1.5
It is free
It works very well and will do the following:

1/ Remove the "Get Windows 10" icon
2/ It will disable Windows 10 updates
3/ Prevent your computer from secretly downloading Windows 10 installation files
4/ Detect and remove the hidden Windows 10 installation files if they're already on your PC

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Hello, this GWX Control Panel is VERY INTERESTING.

I have so problems ( as far as I know ;) ) with this Windows 10 update ( secretly upgrade ) and definitely don't want Windows 10 on my laptop.

Should I use this GWX Control Panel, just to be 100 % on the safe side ?
