How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Have you been bit flipped ?
Don't know what exactly is meant by that.

The explanation was in the linked article in the post you quoted (868). Had to do with the fact that if you "reserved" a copy of Win 10 at some point, "a bit was flipped" and regardless of WU settings, those machines were going to download and install Win10.

Yes I read the article but I didn't know if it meant having reserved the win 10 copy (which I did) or the solutions proposed (registry changes)
The last thing I did (uninstalling and hiding all the Updates mentioned in my list) was to change
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
"AllowOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001
to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
"AllowOSUpgrade"=dword:00000000

This solved the problem at the moment.
Just received the new patches. None of the old hidden returned.

They all look OK - except maybe KB3135445

The description is

This article describes an update that contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This update has a prerequisite.
The description is ambiguous - prerequisite meaning "something that's "required before." - I fear this will again start Windows 10 upgrade proposal.
Will wait what the others have to say about it.

I installed KB3135445 on the 4th. No "undesirable" results so far. I assumed it was OK as it's also targeted at Server 2008 which is not a Win10 candidate.

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that Windows Update now takes huge amounts of memory, because you cannot install the update that supposedly reduces the memory useage, because that is the exact same update that gives you Windows 10. This one:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3050265

The datastore.edb file is now a whopping great 950MB...has anyone else got this same problem? I manage a lot of friends and family machines and have definitely noticed that it will take them ages to check for Windows updates, because they have a much slower machine and it takes ages to load that datastore.edb file into memory and for the process to run properly.

My personal list of updates that I am avoiding are as follows:

That's why I install all the Windows update client updates. Not only was it taking hours to scan it was using up to 2GB of memory. Now it takes virtually no time and maxes out at around 200mb.
The latest is KB3135445 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3135445

As you have home premium you could block it using GWX control panel. Works a treat!

There's no need to worry about all the updates. I tend not to skip security updates. Recommended and optional you should check and see which ones apply to you. Some are fixes, some are added features.

I only have 7 updates on my skip list relating to 10/telemetry. But a lot of other users will skip more.

Weaselbites says:
I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that Windows Update now takes huge amounts of memory,
This is what got me started on googling about Windows Update and finally got me here.
My Windows update (set to warn about updates but update manualy) had not been working since I tried Windows 10.
I finally got Windows Update running but it took a whole night. I then uninstalled all the updates that were mentioned here (see my list) and Windows update seemed to run better.
I say "seemed" because only thing I could check was the loading of installed updates. This was impossible before but worked now.

When I look at your list of avoided updates I see 7 updates that I did install and one of them is KB3102810 about which microsoft says :- Fixes an issue in which an update installation takes a long time and the Svchost.exe process occupies 100 percent of CPU usage when you
I installed this on 30/1 so maybe that is what solved my problem and should not be avoided.

Still - installing the updates 2 days ago I found my computer ran much slower during the update.
Maybe it is because I did not yet install KB3135445
I will install it now as kkhoe says no ill effects and Brds7to7 advises to install

FWIW since this update is also recommended for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, it is my belief that it is a fix to the WU client as described, and has nothing to do with W10 per se.

The other two however, not advisable IMO:

KB2952664 This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.

KB3123862 The update adds capabilities to some computers that lets users easily learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10.

Bloody Microsoft Update :mad::mad:
Last update made my pc so slow that I stopped working and waited till it had finished. Once I stopped all activity it progressed rather well.
Today installed KB3135445 and after that the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 voor Windows 7 voor x64 (KB3102433) update.
Downloading speed was OK - then WU said it was making restore point. For 5 minutes. No way to get out of it. Killed WU service - restarted Windows Update and it was still busy making restore point. Then suddenly request to restart pc.

KB2952664 and KB3123862 were already in my list and so not installed (or removed later)

I have been using Windows Vista since years. It is only in september 2015 that I started working with Windows 7. Tried the upgrade to Windows 10 but returned to Windows 7.
So I have no experience with Windows Update in Windows 7. Has it always been slow or is this all still caused by Windows 10???????

Windows 7 Home Premium 64b ServicePack1
My advice Amazone - do what is best for your system.
I've had all the update clients installed since July 2015 and I can honestly say it's solved my long scan times and high memory.
Now, there is a trade-off, the WU clients add an extra file wu.upgrade.ps.dll this is the file (I think) which sticks an annoying "Reserve Windows 10" ad in your Windows Update control panel.
So the solution is to use the GWX control panel (or use the GPO If you use Pro), it will remove the ad and restore the WU control panel as it should be. It's updated to match the latest 10 updates too.
Personally, I'm willing to put up with the GPO setting in place for faster Windows Updates. Waiting for hours for scans to finish isn't very productive in my opinion.
The Windows update clients are nowhere near as annoying as KB2952664 and the GWX app. Those updates basically want to take control of your system and add unnecessary telemetry. If I have no intention of installing Windows 10 then why would I need their crappy telemetry updates? No thanks! :D

If the scan times are fine (and running WU isn't using a ridiculous amount of RAM and CPU) then I would advise people skip those WU client updates as they won't be needed.

Not at all sure why people are confusing Optional/ Recommended updates with Important updates :confused:

Net framework 4.6.1 is clearly a optional/ Recommended update why are you installing it unless a program/ game requires it :/
