Not sure if you guys can help me but here's the problem:

My windows xp computer died on me and a friend offered me an old computer that her ex made for her son who no longer uses it. Basically it was working fine when I first switched it on but as it had not been used for a while when I switched it off it went into microsoft windows download updates mode .... 48 of them! I left it to it and the following morning it would not start up at all. I have managed to get to the computer repair page but it will not repair, go into safe mode or anything else for that matter. I have no COD and am now back to using my sons little compaq until I can get something sorted. If it is fixable it will save me a few quid to say the least so I would appreciate any help or advice.
Cheers

Hey Sunbeam, and welcome to SF!
Let's see if we can help you out.

When you say you have gotten to the repair page, can i ask why you even thought to do this?

Did you get a black screen stating the bootmgr is corrupt/missing?
If so can you try following this tutorial : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.html

Also, are there any other error messages showing up when you start up?

Thanks!

Hello Sniper,

I got to the repair page from info off this site.
The error messages I have got back were oxo, with the comment "unspecified changes to system config might have caused problem" and the other one was " unspecified error occurred 0x8000ffff

When I start up its just a black screen. I have managed to get to the c: prompt and tried the bcdedit, bootrec but no good!
I'm not that computer savvy :-(
