How to show thumbnails for jp2 images? aka JPEG 2000

How do you get Windows Explorer or other file managers to display thumbnails for jp2 images? I get thumbnails for every image format such as jpg, png, bmp, tif etc., just not p2. This is a question for people who know about things like shell extensions.

I already have Irfanview and its plugins which includes a jp2 handler, which means IV can open jp2 files but that doesn't mean Explorer shows the thumbnails.

Hi catalogue,

I just did a Google search and it appears that Irfanview and its plugins should open the files!

I also found this which might me helpful => JP2-ShellExtension - "JP2view_Engine 1.6".

I hope this helps!

You somehow missed the second half of my post - I specifically said that Irfanview OPENS the files but Explorer doesn't show the thumbnails.

I also found that shell extension but it says Win 7 isn't supported.

Open IrfanView - Thumbnails, navigate to your pictures, and select Show Thumbnails.

If you want to change the way Thumbnails are displayed, go to IrfanView - Thumbnails > Options > Set Thumbnail Options.

This doesn't answer the question. I specifically said I want to see thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Sorry to be blunt but there's no other option given that people are misunderstanding the original question. I already know everything about thumbnails within Irfanview in deep detail. I am grateful for the willingness to help though!

Hello catalogue,

Windows 7 does not natively display jp2 file thumbnails.
You could display jp2 thumbnails using a thumbnail browser, which you have just said you do not want to do.

The alternative is to use a third party shell extension to windows explorer.
What are Shell extensions?

Use NirSoft's ShellExView to view the details of the shell extensions installed on your computer.
I cannot personally recommend a specific windows explorer shell extension for viewing jp2 thumbnails, as I have never downloaded and installed any.

However, XnView Shell Extension Download XnView Shell Extension - MajorGeeks is a popular choice. Supported formats : XnView . The Best Windows Photo Viewer, Image Resizer and Batch Converter.

Alternatively, SageThumbs supports many picture formats (162 formats). Get thumbnails for all possible image and video formats in Explorer folders. SageThumbs also supports XnView plugins for more formats (additional 26 formats). Download SageThumbs here: Download SageThumbs 2.0.0.23 .

I just installed the SageThumbs program but can't figure out how to get the Options page to appear. Can anyone advise on this?
