I want .jpg to show Thumbnails ONLY!

Okay I hope I have the right forum & here is my beef! I have Windows 7 Ultimate, & I do TWO things, program & work on websites. Now with websites, I process LOTS of images, I probably have 50,000 images or so.

Now as a programmer when I look at a file, I want to see a detail of the file, with it's extension, such as myfile.exe or myfile.dll. (modified date, size are good to see too)

BUT when I work with images, I want to see thumbnails, not details, not ocean water, the default image, or white paper background image. I know thumbnails take time to index, hence part of my problem. BUT you see when I work with a photo editor, I use Fireworks (but whether in Dreamweaver or Photoshop, I want to see the images so I can pick.

Lately, I am getting the green bar across the folder slowing down showing files, I am re-indexing now, which is taking time, but what is frustrating is that I can't get any work done, because I am constantly having to reboot to get Windows Explorer to work without the spinning circle & green bar progress.

Not sure what to do? Do I have too many images on the computer? If so, I never had this much of a problem with Vista?

Well, my re-index may be doing some good. Jury is out. My old pictures seem to be loading properly. Some of my websites I have designed are still showing the white paper icon, with the upper right corner tucked, but maybe when the index is done, it will fix. I guess I have a lot of reading up on indexing, file associations... to figure out.

I will make note of this, I did try Disk Cleanup. But will try your options. I just decided to try something that may work. I am doing a search of .jpg on my D: drive which has most images. I got a message to add more of D: to the index, which I am doing. Now I may be seeing more images populate with their 'true' image instead of the 'cheesy' windows picture or 'piece of crappy paper' icon. Thanks, I will update. :)

Well yes anything on another drive will need to be indexed for thumbnails to be saved instead being rebuilt every time you open the alternative drive,
Your showing 6 gigs of ram ?
What is the archive size plus on the C-drive ?

My C: drive is 120 Gig SSD and 75 Gigs at least is free. The D: drive is 500 Gigs and about 60% is free on it. I do try to keep most images on D: drive. I do have some photo or video editing installed on C: drive, because I thought it was faster to process video on the solid-state drive. It would be nice to just save instead of rebuilding. I don't know when this started, but I have been trying to do a bit of video (movie building) to put together a crowd funding venture.:)

When was the last time you cleaned out your case of the computer ?
Behind the intake fan is probably the dirtiest places you'll ever see,
Cheers.

Ps,
That's allot of files on D,
You might need to add another stick of ram,
What is the average size folder on D ?

I am going to give up for a while. I am just forced to reboot, because my explorer window justs sits, with that damn green bar going across the top of the folder. I have to be able to see my images later this evening to work on a website. I will think of something later. Thanks all.

I am going to run Adware, Anti-Spy & Anti-Malware. Don't know what else to do. I have been starting a new website, but it is more difficult because the images I need to choose from are just white pieces of paper with the upper right corner folded down.

I don't know exactly why you need or want to use Explorer to "manage" your image collection. My own feeling is that there are obviously far superior dedicated image-browsing products available (for free and for pay), same as there are better audio and video and multi-media player programs available than MS provides. It's almost always better to use "the right tool for the right job", rather than a "one size fits all" as Explorer tries to be.

Anyway, I've been using ACDSee as my image browser probably since back in 1993. I've come through many versions of course over these decades, but continue to use the old tried-and-true version 4 for my primary image collection browser (about 850,000 images) because it is so fast and lean and does exactly what I need it to do and is not bloated as the newer versions of the product are. The current "standard" product is up to version 17, and the "pro" version line is up to 7.1 (which I actually do have and use occasionally). But for my image browsing and organizing needs, version 4 is perfect. You can open multiple ACDSee program windows, and then drag/drop from one to the other, etc.. You can also drag/drop within one program window, from the thumbnail pane over to the Explorer pane. Lots and lots of additional functionality I could talk about.

The primary presentation (which you can modify) is (1) Explorer tree in upper-left, (2) preview pane in lower-left, and (3) thumbnail pane on right which can show thumbnails, details, or details+thumbs. You can alter the sizes of everything shown, as well as the annotation information that shows in the thumbnail frames. Hovering the mouse over a thumbnail reveals all data. Lots of ways to display, browse, slideshow, etc.

The "pro" version provides lots more tagging and categorizing and light-table functionality, intended for use by photographers, etc., who might take thousands of shots and want to compare them side-by-side on the screen as they narrow down the select to eliminate the chaff and just see the wheat.

Anyway, I'm sure you've considered something other than Explorer, but I can really vouch for ACDSee. The very basic version 4 view looks as follows, but the "pro" version is much more modern and sleek and "dark skin" (which is very trendy lately, a la Photoshop):

. So I am happy, will wait to be sure. The answer I believe was installing Win7codec. I am not sure what happened. But I know I had trouble with some of my video slides, and had to even change a movie from mp4 to avi. I had tried to reinstall the codec before but was getting spyware of adware or virus. So I had to look around for the right one. I got from Codec Guide: K-Lite Codec Pack - For XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8 site, I believe, anyway that is the page they sent me to. Well, I will have to get busy on that one website I have promised to do. I really need the money, and I was afraid she would think I was stalling. :)

I didn't see your post, dsperber, sounds like you have quite a display. I am just happy my images are back. I just need to see them when I design. When I program I don't, hence the images, media, documents sub-folders. Those are thumbnails, the rest are details, with 'date modified', 'size'...
