Solved How to stop this Indexing

Win 7 PC with 3 HDD. The tower sits on a shelf above my head without a side-panel cover. I ticked something somewhere when I swapped a HDD earlier this week. Now this rattling indexing noise is driving me up the wall.

Been into control Panel > Indexing > no HDD is ticked to 'index'. But the noise rolls on like torrential rain on a tin roof.

Apart from throwing a thick blanket over the tower what else can I do to stop this noise?

Disk activity can be a Anti virus scan but I suspect of Win update.
Open WU and do a manual scan for updates. Report if it scans forever.

At this time it really doesn't matter what your system is doing.
The fact that your hard drive is making all that noise is a problem.
Any hard drive should not be making all that noise, if in fact it is your hard drive making all that noise.
Check and verify the noise is coming from a hard drive and not something like a fan that is making the noise. If you verify the noise is coming from the hard drive, I recommend saving everything you want to keep to a external drive and replacing the noisy hard drive. At that time you will have a choice of SSD's or another hard drive.

Why do you keep the side panel removed from your case?

If the HDD is making that much noise it's a wonder it is still working. The most likely cause of loud noises is a dry fan bearing, so check the CPU cooling fan & look around for other fans such as under the graphics card.

1. The drive was sick when tested. Now replaced.
2. The panel is off as I plug in another drive but bypass the tedious correct way. I just lay it outside the tower with the internal cables pulled over to it.
