How to tell if window 7 is genuine?

Years ago my father bought a PC installed with window 7 x32. However the seller guy told him that the window running on his PC wasn't genuine.So i decided to run MGADiag Tool and the result says that it is genuine. I'm pretty confused now.Can the result from MGADiag Tool be trusted?or do we have other ways to confirm this? the report from MGADiag Tool as follows:

For what version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed - according to the COA sticker on the case?
MGADiag can be trusted - but only so far. It's a technical tool, and can be fooled by technical means such as Activation Exploits.
Always, with machines pre-installed with Windows, the deciding point is the COA sticker - which is what the machine shipped with in the first place.

If the COA sticker says Windows 7 Ultimate OA , then the install is genuine - anything else, and it's counterfeit, and probably enabled by an Activation Exploit.

I couldn't find any coa sticker like you mentioned (only intel sticker on the case). Now i'm pretty convinced our window is counterfeit.thanks.i appreciate your reply.

But - you won't find a COA sticker on a home/custom built computer. Such as in my case. I build my computers from parts from Newegg, CDW, and such. Then I buy the Windows program (disk or download) and get the Activation code.

Question: on the Control Panel>System screen there is a "windows is genuine" symbol. Does that mean it's genuine? Also will it say "Activated" if it is fake (can you activate a fake copy)?

If you buy a Windows License you will ALWAYS get either a COA sticker (for OEM versions) or a Proof of License card - or possibly an email from MS if you purchased it from the MS Store.

It is very easy to 'activate' counterfeits - it takes about two minutes and a little googling. The problem is that the process requires what is in effect the installation of a rootkit hack into the system, and this can have unforeseen and unpredictable effects (not to mention the possibility of the hack also containing serious malware or viruses).

There are also a number of different type of counterfeit - such as the subscription Key which is sold on a few times. All the 'activated' machines will be declared invalid when the vendor triggers an alarm at MS (and they all do, eventually!)


On the Control Panel>System screen, I suggest that you look much closer at the wording.
It does NOT - ever - say 'Windows is Genuine'. It says 'Windows is activated'
The 'Genuine Windows' icon on the right does not say that Windows is genuine - it merely invites you to make sure that Windows is genuine.
