How to turn back WMP

As long as I've had the computer I never set up WMP. Don't use it. Today in the course of troubleshooting (no WMP add-on in IE8) I reluctantly started setting it up. I must have cancelled at some point so now I have some of my media files (music) loaded in when I start the program.

I want to get back to where it was. Meaning it has not been set up (gives the prompt to start setting it up). Any way to do this? Will a ui/ri still leave me with it enabled? Thanks

I believe running that line from the search bar (may have to go command line) will solve it for you.

The wizard won't load, an error occured. That can't be good.

A system restore got it back to how it was (not set up) but the troubleshooting wizard still does not work. Suggestions?

Did that one, still get error on the Troubleshooting Wizard. Uninstalled/reinstalled, ran fix it tool, sys restore and no wizard :shock: .

SP1 is installed. Ran SFC /verify a few days ago and everything was good. Will do a SCANNOW and post back. Here is the error message:

Okay here's my last thought to turn it to default state.
control panel - programs and features - Turn Windows features on or off
Scroll to media features
expand it
Untick media player and okay through it.
Reboot, go back to the same place and tick the box again okay through it.

If that doesn't return it to default/initial settings, I don't know what will.
even that isn't actually removing it, it's kind of disabling it and restarting it.

Added to Maguscreed I would also recommend uncheck on .NET Frameworks 3.5 and re-check it from Programs and Features. If nothing works then Repair Install would the best thing to do.

I have .NET Framework 4 in Programs. I should have the earlier versions somewhere but if that's the one (3.5) that's not working right, how to fix it? I could redownload 3.5. Worth it? I did a repair on 4. Still getting the error. Also did disable/enable as Maguscreed suggested too.

No way to do a repair install, no Win 7 disks. Newer system so not sure why this would be giving me trouble. I guess I'm stuck with it. Hopefully it won't manifest itself in other problems with WMP.

in the meantime might I suggest VLC player, it will stream capture, even convert is fairly small and doesn't rely on codecs so it plays most everything right off the bat.

.NET Frameworks 3.5 and above is build into the OS so you won't find it. If it's under warranty check with the vendor and see if you get an OS disk.

I am sure this issue is related to .NET

.NET 3.5.1 is listed in Windows Features. I have unchecked it and rechecked it.

In programs I have .NET Framework 4 Client Profile listed. Is this correct or should it be the full version?

Are there other wizards to check to see if all will give this error?
