I just started having this problem a couple days ago. Nothing new done to computer..no programs added or removed, or any other changes made. PC will not boot to start up. When I turn it on, I get a black screen with the mouse arrow showing only. I am able to boot in safe mode using system restore, but when I shut my computer down, I have to do the same thing again over again, only now when I try system restore, I'm told I don't have any restore points. I let my PC sit idle for 24-hours, and a restore point finally did show up. I have not shut down since, using just "sleep" mode. Avast, Malware bytes, checks out okay, as well as Fix-me-stick.
I have windows-7 home editon 64-bit. HP model 200-5250. Any help would be much appreciated. I am just a regular PC user, and not computer savy, (65-years old), so I would appreciate help in as simple non-technical terms possible.

Thanks for your help Lance, but I actually tried control-alt-delete before when getting the black screen, and nothing happened....just stayed on black screen.
