Hi, i'm having trouble installing my HP Deskjet 1280 on windows 7, I have previously installed it on Vista with no problems, however now I seem to be having problems.

I do have the install Cd, but when inserted it gives me an error message saying to use the "add printer" option in controll panel. But when i use this and select "have disk" it does not recognise a printer driver to install.

Any help would be greatly apreciated!

Microsoft or HP don't have a driver for this printer yet. You could try a 1200 series driver? :)

I have had this issue in the past, I have used the 1220c driver (not software although i may attempt later). The 1220c is the predecessor to the 1280 and for the life of me i dont really now what the difference is. One is silver and grey and the other cream, I have both in my Office and they use the same cartridges. the Driver file is available from Microsoft on driver updates.

thanks so much!

Thanks tulliallan,

I took your advice to install 1220c driver but accidently installed 1120c which works a treat! Drivers were found using "add a printer button" in Devices and Printers.
My computer is an HP Windows 7 64 bit and HP were so unhelpfull on their support line. They told me since it was a printer problem and the printer is out of warranty I would have to pay £15.99 to go on to their pay support! Never mind that the computer is brand new, also an hp and the problem an internal driver.

I recommend this fix to everyone:D

Hi Tulliallan and Pshend!
I have the same problem with my deskjet 1280. I tried your methods, but my "windows update" is not able to find any driver when i try it through "add a printer"... so i can't choose any other driver :( Do you have any URL to the drivers? or any other idea to do it... im a bit desperate! :( I hope you can help me. Thanks!!;)

Greta,
I didn't click on "windows update", bet selected manufacturer and printer from the boxes above. These are drivers that are already on the computer. That windows update button never works in my experience!

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (from the MSDNAA) and I couldn't get the printer installed using the recommended settings from the HP website, or the 1220c driver that you guys suggested.

Instead, I downloaded the Windows Vista Home Premium (x64) drivers for the 1280 and those worked fine.

I just went to device manager and directed it to the folder that contained the vista drivers.

@emJay

I tried your suggestion and had success with it as well. Thanks very much for posting your solution.

I'm sure I tried the vista drivers ages ago and they didn't work <shrug> but they definitely worked this time!
