I would try the Toshiba HD scan so you have a second opinion since Hitachi doesn't seem to want to give one. If it will repair you might be back in business after several passes and a Disk Check.
I've tried downloading the 3 Toshiba Windows Diagnostic Tool files from here. But non of them are 'iso image' files. So I can't use it for a boot disk. I tried adding the application to a data disk, but unsurprisingly, that didn't work.
Ok, I'll have a look for, and use the startup repair from a dvd that you posted.. and see if that makes a difference. Which hopefully it will.
Again thanks for all your help. I appreciate it, I'd be very stuck otherwise.
