HP Laptop wont start after battery dies

I have an HP Pavillin DV7. If the battery dies, it wont restart. When it does its a blank screen and the cap lock and num lock blink twice. I can do a restore, then it will be so slow and laggy. Then Ill run some clean up stuff and it will help but not that great. I have AVG virus and its clean.

I replaced the battery but that didnt help.

I am assuming it is powering on with the power adaptor? If so then run these even in safe mode if you have to

As a matter of curiosity how old is the machine? Just wondering if you bought extra warranty with it.

As a by the by I do not think much of AVG but I suppose it is a personal choice but in any case in addition to the above you could run these too as no anti virus is foolproof.
If you do install these keep them as we all use these programs as a back u[ scan to out main AV - well most of us.

OK run those scans HPmom I posted before to start eliminating a a few things. The first two should pick any problems in the filing system and the others any rubbish that has crept in.

What happens if you remove the battery and run it on the power supply only?

When the LEDs blink twice it indicates BIOS failure. Check your BIOS is updated, if not update it and check, if it's already updated could you reseat the HDD & Memory once & then check.

If you see a bios version newer than the one you have download & install it.

When the laptop runs without problems with the battery removed it indicates a problem with the battery or the power circuit on the motherboard.

If you replaced the original HP battery with a replacement battery made by another manufacturer it could be a case of an incompatible battery or a poorly made battery.

If it is a problem with the circuitry on the motherboard there is little that a user can do.

Regarding a BIOS upgrade: flashing a BIOS is a potentially risky procedure that should only be performed for reason. And even then it should not be undertaken unless you are completely clear on the procedure and steps. Installing a BIOS using a Windows Installer is not recommended here as there are many more things that can go wrong with that process.

An upgrade to your BIOS should not be necessary to correct a BIOS error. You simply need to reset your current BIOS. That you can do like this:
Shut down the PC > Remove the battery > disconnect the Power Supply > press and hold the Power Button for 20 or 30 seconds to discharge all power to the motherboard, then reconnect everything and start the PC.

You can also press the correct key to enter the BIOS SEtup and then go to the Exit Tab and choose "Restore BIOS Defaults" (or similar language) and then Save & Exit.

I am not quite sure what the thinking is about installing or reinstalling Drivers in terms of addressing this problem. The drivers that handle the power process are native to Windows.

So you are saying updating BIOS is pointless? The LEDs are blinking twice, thats an error code for BIOS failure, possibly BIOS corruption, which an update would fix. If it's not BIOS corruption it's hardware failure. Re-seat RAM sticks, Graphics & HDD.

I replaced the battery because it was not lasting very long. the new battery did not change anything except now it last longer.
