HP Pavillion, Intel i3 Graphics Driver error 80070103

I'm helping a friend with their PC. It is an HP Pavilion p7-1110. My friend installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 onto a new hard drive, and is using that. I've gotten through all of the Windows Update mess except for the Graphics Driver (the one I actually care about, of course). Without it I'm stuck with no Aero support and boxy square screen resolutions.

Windows Update reports the error code 80070103. According to the internet, this error means that the driver is either already installed or I'm trying to install an older version of the driver than what already is installed. However I do not have any Graphics Drivers installed (I think). I've attempted to download the driver and install it manually from the both HP Support site and the Intel Download site. Both drivers have resulted in the same problem.

After installing the driver, it asks for a restart. So I let it. The boot process makes it all the way past the good ol' Windows 7 logo, but at that point, my video cuts out completely. I have to boot into safe mode and uninstall the driver to fix the problem.

My best guess is that there's some sort of issue with using the HP hardware on non-HP software, but I have no idea if there's any way to fix this properly without getting a hold of the the original hard drive and using the recovery or somethin' to turn it into an HP version of Windows 7. Another possibility is that I can get video if I plug into the DVI port instead of the VGA, but setting that up would be difficult and I'd rather avoid that if I can get away with it.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome DrCreepss now looking for the graphics driver has been a bit of a mystery because the HP site lists drivers for AMD and NVidia and in the system specs for that machine it lists the Intel graphics.

So which drivers did you try to install?? Can you send the link you accessed for that please.

The fresh install was that done with an OEM version of Windows and I am assuming it is a genuine copy too because that depends on where it was purchased from.

Going on from there how did you setup the hard drive before installation? What I normally do is to clean the drive using DISKPART as a straight format is not in my mind thorough enough to get rid of any trace of the old install. I am thinking too is it a new drive?

When you mention the DVI port or the VGA do you mean you would rather use the VGA?? because the DVI gives a higher quality output for the graphics.

Hi DrCreepss,
No Graphics driver installed = black screen

Any way joking aside
open device manager
select display adapters expand
Right click select properties
now go to the details tab
hit the little dropdown arrow
select
Hardware ID's
it will show pci/ven details
post them please

or route b

follow this link -- uninstall drivers with DDU
Display Driver Uninstaller: How to use
>>read it first<<
basically it will remove your current driver and the generic MS driver will be used by your system until it updates

I did not set up the hard drive, but it is not the one that came with the box. I can't say if it's a legit copy, but I have no reason to doubt that it is.

The download for the driver I got from the HP website said "Intel (original)", which makes me wonder if it's actualy the same driver as the one on the Intel website (but since it's HP we're talking about, unlikely).

I'll try the other suggestions when I get home. Thank you, this is awesome.

BTW: I'm not using DVI due to only having 1 DVI monitor and it's always in use.
