Help! I have an HP Touchsmart 300 with Kaspersky anti-virus software recently installed (2 months ago). I needed to disable parental controls but I couldn't remember the password. Kaspersky sent me a detailed fix (If you forgot your Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 password). I got through step #3 and onto #4, and now my computer freezes upon reboot. I've tried a repair, safe mode, pretty much every option - and everything freezes. Kaspersky support is useless - they told me to bring it to a local tech to repair it. I'm willing to wipe the system but I can't find my restore disks (grrrr - I have them for every computer but that one). At one point I got a message that said BOOTMGR is missing.

Can anyone help?

Everything possible is here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start
leading up to if necessary rescuiing your files to do a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

Do yourself a favor and stick with a free lightweight AV like MSE recommended in reinstall tutorial, adding Malwarebytes Real Time protection if you still get infected. These assure perfect performance instead of headaches and occasional nightmares.

Thank you. If I don't really care about the files on the computer, would you suggest skipping directly to step #11?

You want to do the Clean Reinstall Windows 7?

If so I suggest you read the steps carefully and ask back any questions to be sure the install goes perfectly.

In particular read the Special Note to HP Owners at the end as many recent model HP's offer a Minimal Recovery which is nearly the same as a Clean Reinstall but already has the drivers and is preactivated.

Otherwise be sure to check the HP website for the touch software so you know what needs to be installed from there if it isn't provided during install or after you Enable hardware auto-updating via Windows Update (Steps 3 and 6) to install all IMportant and Optional Windows UPdates. You'll need your network adapter driver in your backup in case its not provided so you can get online to get the Updates.

Then you'll need to test performance to determine which software needs to be brought in from HP Website.
