I had AVG previously, found the removal tool, so I ran it to make sure it was fully removed.

There is only one hotfix installed on your system. There are a minimum of 55 available for Windows 7. Please visit Windows Update and get the rest of the updates immediately.

Please uninstall the Catalyst Control Center. It has had some BSOD issues with Win7 systems on occasion. If needed, feel free to reinstall the latest version once we're finished troubleshooting.

Can't say how ignorant I feel atm :/

Checked the windows update issue, had notifications turned off, and automatic update turned off... BRILLIANT. Installing all updates now. Downloaded the new driver for soundmax, no dice at this point - it crashes during install. I will try again after Windows updates.

I have no idea where to find the Catalyst Control Center. Closest thing I can find is an ATI program?

I will check the BSOD index the next time it crashes - I haven't written down the specifics yet.

Bootable diag is on my schedule for tomorrow.

Malware scans (I have run a number of them) are clean. (probably the only thing I feel competent about here)

Driver updates - looked them up on the list, both entries say to rename the file and see which programs get broken? How do I update them?

Cant get the latest .net framework update installed. All other updates are done. Still no Soundmax success, so I deleted the driver. Will post new analysis tomorrow.

Don't worry about not knowing this stuff - it'll come with time and experience.

We'll work on the SoundMax stuff once we've finished all the other stuff.
What exactly does the error message say when it crashes?

I never installed the Catalyst Control Center myself. I'd suggest downloading the Driver Only (it's below the Catalyst Control Center on the download page) from the ATI website ( Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD ), then uninstall all the ATI stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program, then install the freshly downloaded Driver Only.

As for the driver updates, this is what to do:
- rename 1 of the drivers (from ending in .sys to ending in .BAK)
- use the CD/DVD programs and see which one is broken.
- if you don't find any of the programs to be broken, don't worry about it (but remember it in case of future issues)
- then do the same with the other driver (rename, use, don't worry) :0)

Once you find the name of the program, then you can update it (if desired) or remove it.

I've had .NET issues at work. Please do the following:
- uninstall all .NET in reverse numerical order (uninstall v4, then v3/3.5, then v2, then v1) until all are gone
- revisit Windows Update and ask it to install all of them.

Then (FWIW) try the SoundMax driver again.

Ok, got .net framework v4 installed, and the soundmax re-installed and working (So far so good).
No crashes since getting all of the updates installed, I'm going to let everything run normally this week and see if I get a crash, I'm headed out of town, so I will have my wife document any crashes or crash info.

I'm inclined to think the lack of updates caused it, but we will see - thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
