Solved http://news.yahoo.com/ crashes IE11

The above URL will frequently cause IE11 to stop working. IE11 is effectively useless until the system is rebooted. SWMBO (wife) insists on using IE11 and it's driving me crazy why this is happening. The URL works fine with no issue on FF v41, but it's using AdBlockPlus and Ghostery. Can someone give me a hint on what to look at? Clearly, I'm stumped. Thanks. Jim

You mentioned having to restart her computer before you could use IE11 again. Did you check Task Manager to see that all instances of IE11 had exited? Manually kill the ones that might still be around.




Take note of her home page tab(s) and any bars* that she like to have showing.

*Menu bar, Favorites bar, Status bar....

Then completely reset IE via these steps:

If her OS is 64bit, turn on EPM after the reset:

Uninstall NIS** and use MSE while we troubleshoot this.

**guessing that you both use the same AV app.




If IE11 still crashes, try starting IE without any add-ons.

Yahoo.com infected lots of visitors late last year via Flash based adverts. There is no way to keep Flash patched. Each new version still has flaws. Yahoo (and many other websites) was serving up CryptoWall variants. I hope that she has a good data backup scheme.

Thanks for the rapid reply.
1. I had checked Task Manager, no other instances of !E running.
2. I have done the reset before. It seemed to correct things for awhile, but the issue returns after some time.
3. Already running with EPM.
4. The next time it fails, I'll try the manual start you suggest.
5. I was already suspicious of browser hijack via served up advertisements, since there are no blocking add ons enabled with IE11 on this system. Since it happens so randomly (but often), My assumption was ads with malware or third party pixel element. Also the reason I run AdBlockPlus and Ghostery on FF.
Thanks again. I'll keep watch and see what happens and post a follow up the next time it happens.

I was going by this in your specs:
Browser I.E. 11 default/Firefox
I figured that you used IE11 the most.

I keep I.E. as default because things from Microsoft seem to work better.
It seemed to even help downloading Windows 7 Updates until Microsoft plugged up the pipe line with Windows 10.

IE11 stopped working again on Yahoo news site. Oddly enough, for the first time, IE auto-recovered from the halt. Yes, automatic crash recovery is enabled in internet options. Given that Yahoo news is full of served up BS advertisements disguised as news articles, I'm betting this is where the problem is originating. Maybe one of these days, I'll get lucky and trap one. MSERT, malwarebytes, NIS, and Spybot failed to find anything. CCleaner is also run after every IE session.

It would be interesting to know if NIS is the cause. Uninstalling NIS is probably a better test than disabling it. MSE can be used during the test.

Would be surprised if NIS was the cause. It certainly doesn't affect FF v41 or Chrome, just IE11 with the same URL. Also, time stamp entires from NIS logs don't show anything relevant to the last episode. I checked when it occurred.

Open ie11 go to gear symbol on the top right and Manage add-ons,
On the bottom of the left column switch to Show All add-ons
Then on the top Toolbars and extensions
Post a screen shot.

Done. Waiting for a hangup to occur. Did have the same thing happen with a local newspaper web site on Saturday, and questioned them about it. The problem disappeared on Sunday, though. No reply from their IT department yet, but it's only Monday morning. We'll see what happens.

Not sure why there should only be 1

Real network is an interesting one there did you install that one willingly ?

I have no idea why there are two ActiveX entries, nor why there are two QuickTime objects. I've used RealPlayer for years to rip/burn music CDs because back in the early XP days, it worked better than WMP. Then they came out with RealTimes/RealCloud and it was a mess. I uninstalled and purged all RealTimes and RealPlayer entries from the system and registry.
