Hi guys,

I have some VHD from Windows 2008 I would like to use in Win7. I've read around internet that is possible, but they will just hang whenever I try to boot them.

Do anybody knows the exact steps that should be taken to use the VHD from Hyper-V in Windows Virtual PC?

Thanks a lot!

Depends - First, were these VHDs also created on this particular machine that you are running? if not, that may be a problem - Hyper-V supports Virtualization extensions, and those OSs could already be set for particular hardware that is no longer accessible, causing the hang....

Thanks for your reply, johngalt.

Yes, the virtual machines were created in this same machine.

Have you tried to copy your VHD file to your Windows 7 folder <username>\Virtual Machines? If you created that in the same machine, I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Thanks Kari,

Yes, I tried several machines with the same result: they will just hang after boot.

Now I will try some different configurations and let you know.

I did something simlar, I pulled a virtual pc vhd and dumped it into virtualbox, it would just hang.

I turned off all the acpi/virtualization/etc and it booted, and went through the motions of reinstalling everything in the virtual machine (it was a 98 vm).

Can you be more specific?

  1. How did you import a VHD into VBox?
  2. How did you manage to get it working at all without all the enhancements
  3. Were you able to turn the enhancements back on after installing everything

I copied the .vhd file and just pointed to it in the virtual box settings. Vbox supports a couple of vhd formats.

It booted up after I turned off the settings I mentioned, but it had to reinstall all the acpi/mobo/etc drivers.

If I turned the enhancements back on it would hang again. You're techinally not supposed to be able to switch out acpi drivers in virtual machines, but in this particular case it worked. The equivalent of changing out your mobo.

Yeah, that is very intriguing - normally 'switching' ACPI results in what i happening to you without the switch.

As for VHD support, my apologies, last time I looked they only supported OpenVHD, and I have forgotten to go back an see what they support now - but it is nice to know they support VPC VHDs - that means that I can download some existing VHDs and load them in VBox - yay!

Getting back to your issue, though, even after installing the drivers and such, enabling it causes the VHDs to hang?

I think it is partially b/c the Hyper-V may still not support Virtualization as well as VBox, but that was not my understanding when I was researching it for the university....

Let me look into it again....
