I am totally blank on installation of Windows 7 on a new HDD.
I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 7, 6 years ago.
It was all pre-installed into my laptop. No tinkering for me.
In Win 98, all I needed was to pop in the installation CD and the installation was done when I typed in the Product Key S/N.

My 6 years old laptop is dying as the HDD is nearing it lifespan. Please read http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...cant-boot-due-sysconfig-changed-disk-err.html

In Windows 7, I need to download the whole Windows 7 OS platform from MS server then burned into a DVD disc or a USB flashdrive.

Then I need to format the HDD to NTFS format.
Then what?

I read this section http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ows-7-a.html?filter[3]=Installation and Setup and it seemed easy.

What are the procedures? It seemed complicated from the threads that I read.
What are UEFI,GPT? I only know MBR.
Do I need to partition my new HDD and copy images of my system reserved, PQ services from the dying HDD?
How do I do that?
The attached picture is the old dying HDD.

Thank you for your reply

Hi,
If you indeed have a upgrade disk you can use it I've done it a couple of times already,
See option 3's bat file to make it possible,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html
The only trick is to disconnect from the internet when you install so and wait to enter the activation key until you run the bat file,
Then activate with internet connection.
Then run all windows updates...

Hopefully you already have all of your personal files backed up already :)

Everything needed is here to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

Judging by your screenshot you do not have UEFI BIOS. So you'd just replace the hard drive, boot the Win7 installation media, create and format your partition for install, click Next to begin.

It seems you have a flash stick plugged in showing 8gb RAW. This normally means it is ruined. I would wipe the stick using Diskpart Clean Command then reformat the flash stick using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Then I need to format the HDD to NTFS format.

Do I need to partition my new HDD and copy images of my system reserved, PQ services from the dying HDD?

You can format the new HD before you install IF you want to, but it's not necessary. The Windows installation process will do the necessary formatting during the install itself, after you boot from the installation media.

Likewise, Windows will make the necessary partitions as needed.

You don't need to copy images of System Reserved. It will be created anew on a new installation.

If you have a new drive and valid installation media, the standard procedure is to boot from the installation media and tell Windows to install to the unallocated space on the new drive. From that point on, Windows makes partitions and formats them as required.

I think that PQ Services partition is related to restoring to factory specifications, but is otherwise unnecessary. If you think you might some day want to restore to factory specifications, you would need to make an image of it. But, frankly, I'd think on a 6 year old laptop, the better idea would be to instead reinstall Windows on the new hard drive and then make an image of that new fresh re-installation with an imaging application such as Macrium, so that you could then later restore to that new state---rather than to the state of your laptop as it was when you bought it.

On the 1st April, downloaded service manual guide Acer Aspire 4736G from Scribd.com>learning to take whole laptop apart.I have not done that yet.

As at 8th April, installed Win7 Home Premium from DVD.Surprisingly, it took only 8-10 minutes to install using the DVD reader but the whole learning process took 30 minutes as I tinkered here and there.Fooling around with the options and cancelling installations.

Whereas,Win 98 on a CD ROM using a CD player took an hour, all the time I installed.

I did not format the new HDD during the beginning.Auto shutdown still persist, only once. Not battery problem.
Opening a new thread on this matter.
Thank you to everyone for the replies.

Did you follow the steps for how drivers are handled in Win7 which are important enough they are printed in red in Clean Reinstall Windows 7?

Those who follow that guide have never had a return problem after getting a perfect install. So far 1.3 million have used it.

cyrilhubert you did something many don't do is the reason it went so well.

You follow instructions and the tutorial.
Thanks for reporting back how well it went.

Continue to follow the tutorial on getting all the updates to Windows 7 and activating Windows 7. Updates do take a while.

I will go back to watching the thread.

Sorry for my late reply,Greg.
For the last 6 days, I was repairing my father's Dell laptop. The Dell laptop is infected with some malwares.
I did not follow the steps for how drivers are handled in Win7 which are important enough they are printed in red in Clean Reinstall Windows 7? .

Why not? The downloaded Acer drivers are located on a possible infected USB
flashdrive. I am still using this all the time shutdown without warning Acer laptop to access the WWW.
Another backup Acer drivers are on a DVD which I saved in 2010 and maybe infected too.
Now, I have to download directly from Acer's website.
