Solved I Broke Windows 7

Hi

Since the update description says it improves security, i suspect it may introduced "SecureBoot". While 64 bit edition of "Windows 7" is capable of booting in UEFI mode, it is still not "SecureBoot" compatible but latest version of "Ubuntu" is. You should check in BIOS setup for any settings related to "SecureBoot" and if one available, disable it.


If no "SecueBoot" related settings can be seen, make sure your USB is working fine by trying it on another machine. Also try the DVD as Greg suggested.

Thanks again for all your help. Everything is fixed, nothing is ruined. I remade the USB and the computer recognized it, I reinstalled windows from scratch, and I updated everything. I changed the settings you (greg) suggested, and it looks like everything is behaving marvellously. I'm leaving the OS on the SSD and putting most of my programs and my user directory on the HDD, and I'm perfectly happy keeping it un-RAIDed.

How does performance compare with install when it was on HDD?

My guess is as I re-populate the computer, it'll slow down some and operate closer to what I had before. For now, the OS starts up noticeably faster than it used to.... =)

It will be especially important to watch SSD used disk space in Properties to not let it max out. Keep a buffer. You can turn off Hibernate and trim paging file, only install to SSD most-used programs which prove they run faster there by comparison.

You can also try enabling IRST to see if it recreates RAID for reinstall to HDD.

Yeah, even just windows takes a huge chunk of it. Would ~4GB be enough of a buffer? I only installed really basic programs (e.g. firefox) to C:, almost everything else is going to the SSD.

I'm pretty set on leaving the configuration as is, unless keeping track of the SSD free space gets too annoying. If I'm feeling a little more adventurous sometime, I'll definitely look into the IRST thing again =).
