I cant expand my c drive

I have about 30 gigabyte of unallocated space. The button to expand my c drive is greyed out in disk management. I have tried all the programs i could find. Please help.

Post a screenshot of the Disk Management => Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.
Pay special attention to Step 5.

i prefer not to post screengrabs, but i have a c drive for windows which 50 gb, a d drive for games which is 150 gb and 30 gb of unallocated space.. i want to merge it with my c drive

Sometimes merging partitions is not as straight forward as you first think. It depends on the position of the partitions, hence the reason to post a Disk Management screenshot!

It sounds like d drive is in between c and free space so you would have to move d to the right and fill the free space then you can grow c. Your not helping by not posting a screenshot

i read a guide somewhere that said the same, but how do i move then d drive to the right?

I hope you made full images of your OS and data partitions, because you're very likely heading for restores "from left to right" on your backup/restore display. Safely merging the unallocated region into d partition involves a few steps. Then, resizing d partition, putting some of d partition into c partition takes a few steps. What utility are you using for this disk management? For example, I use the not-free Acronis Disk Director 12.5.

OK best advice - forget trying to use Windows own Disk Management for anything other than initial setup and checking layouts ...

Use Partition wizard to drag and drop the partitions to the exact layout you want, and when happy, press go and sit back and the software will sort everything.

One thing I always advise is if you are creating two partitions on a drive - eg for OS and Data start the OS at the left end and the data from the Right, that way even Windows will be able to extend the C: Partition

Dynentan--don't accept the Dashlane Password Manager they offer with the installer. It's the 2nd buggiest PW-mger next to LastPass.

That's why I have been using UnChecky, it almost always removes the pre-checked, at the least, it's usually warning, via a pop-up, of the existence of such extras.

One drawback to Partition Wizard free edition is that it does not create boot media.

Aomei Partition assist is a better free version.

Partition Guru free version is also very good, but not so easy for newbies.

well, i have already tried that program, as well as all other programs i could find.. its not letting me change the size of my c drive.. the strange thing is, that it lets me change the size of my d drive, so i can easily add 30 gigabyte more to my d drive.. but not my c drive.. why is that?

Hi Dynentan,

You are making this a lot harder than it needs to be.

A screenshot will give us ALL the information needed in order to be able to give you the CORRECT information to help you, rather than guessing what your disk management looks like and giving you the WRONG information!

As previously posted by another person, I too suspect the unallocated region is to the right of D partition, or, there is something between C partition and the unallocated region. Nothing will change until the correct process is followed as others have previously posted, and, I hope OP has restorable full image backups of the OS partition and of the data partition on external media.
